Short and sweet is my answer. To me it is a bad sign if the rest of the band leaves the stage.

If it is a musical, why not..... Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, Carl Palmer. I don't like drum solos by Metal drummers, like Mike Portnoy etc.

There is no choice for "Depends on whether the drummer is maintaining a groove or not."

I'm not a fan and I'm a drummer. For me, most solos follow the same pattern. There's only a few drummers I didn't mind doing solos but for the most part they are all the same.

Short and tasty - yes. Also if this solo is kind of unexpected.

I like drum solos that are long enough for me to get served at the bar or to nip to the Gents. Otherwise, aural torture.

The drummer better be musical if any solo is going to sustain my interest. Peart, Bonham, Bruford, Morello, Blakey, Gadd, Nate Smith, Gavin Harrison, Antonio Sanchez are the first names that come to mind for me.

I went to the bar and had 2 pints during Bonham's Moby Dick solo, unfortunately he was still banging away on my return.

    Not at all.
Anyway I appreciated the following drummers doing live solos:
    • Jon Hiseman
    • Rod Morgestein
    • Marco Minneman

Jazz - yes, rock - no.

Grateful Dead ones were good since Mickey Hart adds different percussion instruments to it.

Of course. I'm a jazz fan. Some of the best musicians on the bandstand playing the most amazing engaging stuff when I go down to a club and see a band, are the drummers. I'd go see a Joey Baron solo drum show in a second. Baron, Eric McPherson, Max Roach, Ed Blackwell, Billy Higgins, Brian Blade, Paul Motian -- I've seen a lot of great drummers who are great soloists and I've loved hearing them solo. Any instrumentalist can play a great solo if they're great soloists.

It depends on the drummer if it’s Idris Mohammed, Art Blakey, or Steve Gadd then yes.

As an ex drummer, yes - definitely.

Having said that, anything over 5 minutes & my attention starts to wander a bit.

My favourite soloists are probably Buddy Rich, Philly Joe Jones, Joe Morello & Gene Krupa.

Yes, if it's Elvin Jones or Sunny Murray et al, not some stupid rock drummer.

I only love one drum solo from any gene, and that is ringo’s solo on the end.

All other drum solos I detest.

I wish I could just vote "sometimes". I do like the drum solo on In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, but there are plenty of others I don't care for.

I used to when I was younger. When I first heard Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" I was such in awe and thought it was the greatest thing ever. Now that I'm older, I find long drum solos tedious. Same with never ending guitar solos.

I think Keith Moon was right when he said drum solos are boring.

I do enjoy a good drum solo - but only for a couple of listens.
Then I find they are tedious, I want to hear the group with the drummer. I voted "no".

Depends. They got a deservedly bad rep in the heavy metal era, but a good Max Roach solo gets my synapses firing.
