  1. Throwing out some love for Steve Gorman (Black Crowes).

    He’s a monster player.

    Zonder is unbelievable.

If you have ever seen DeJohnette in the flesh you would know simply how amazing he is.
Mike Clark from the Headhunters and Brand X should be in there with a mention as well. Cat can do it all.

Jon Fishman. Sorry if you dont like Phish but the dude is incredible.

So cool to see someone else who appreciates Zonder!

Absolutely. Gotta throw in my two bits for Chad Wackerman as well. He stepped in the Zappa drum chair at age 21 and demolished some pretty advanced compositions. He could read Frank pretty well and give him all the twists his Music required.

    Thanks. ;)

Jarzombek can cut the chops as well but Zonder has that x-factor. Can swing as well as hit hard. He gave that band some lateral movement and just played for the song. I’ll take him (as well as take Fates) over Portnoy as day.

I keep seeing people listing Jazz drummers. I think it's obvious why the list was of Rock drummers - Jazz drummers are typically far more technically talented, probably because more is asked of them than is asked of Rock Drummers.

I picked three favorites that could not be more different:

    Vinnie Colaiuta
    Levon Helm
    Chad Smith

Edit: should have named Grohl, just because it makes some people furious, for reasons I will never understand.

Wow, so few votes for Chad! Check this out, best part of it is it has no Anthony.

Lots of great ones there! Voted for Keltner, Helm & Hayward with Blaine a close third. Check out Hayward's work with Robert Plant & Buddy Guy.

    I'd nominate the rest of the Tulsa guys;

Jamie Oldaker (Clapton, Frampton, Seger, Frehley)
Chuck Blackwell (Leon Russell, Freddie King, Shindogs, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, Everly Brothers)
Jimmy Kartsein (J.J. Cale, Gary Lewis, Clapton, Taj Mahal, Joe Cocker, Everly Brothers)
David Teegarden (Seger, J.J. Cale, Teegarden & Van Winkle)

True, but I’m sure my point still holds. They’re mostly drum nerd choices, sessioners - not the backbones of singular rockin’ machines. Also, maybe, I’m taking the ‘rock’ part of the question rather literally - so, If some of these guys are there then where are Stubblefield, Modeliste, Benjamin, Brown and Purdie?

Absolutely. However, while watching another vid last evening, I noticed on the song "jingo", he actually switches out the traditional grip and goes with the rock grip and then back again during the song all the while not missing a beat.

I saw Wackerman with Zappa in 1984 at E.M. Loews in Worcester. He's a remarkable talent, but a bit less fluid than the Humphrey/Thompson/Underwood trio. Of course, they set the bar so high that walking under it was really the only option. IMO, of course.

Why on earth Jimmy Chamberlin is NEVER included on these lists?

By far the greatest drummer of the 90s. Yet Dave Grohl is on every list ...
