    The Screaming Trees -Witness

From what I would rate as the best album of 1996.

You can tell I'd parted ways with the charts by 1996 because the only song on the list that I've knowingly heard is Wannabe by the Spice Girls. :) It's a fun song so I've given it a vote.

Just to go a little left-field for a minute, here a ten excellent '96 songs from albums that flew under the radar somewhat:

REO Speedwagon - I Still Love You
The Men They Couldn't Hang - To Have And To Hold
    Darden Smith - Drowning Man
New Bushbury Mountain Daredevils - Rebecca's Heart
    Tanglefoot - Loup Garou
Steeleye Span - You Will Burn
Alan Hull - 100 Miles To Liverpool
    Fairport Convention - Lalla Rookh
Kim Seymour - How The West Was Lost
Bob Pegg - The Priest, The Dancer and The Drummer

I don't have many albums from that year and don't like any of the hits, but here's some tunes I like off the albums I have:
    Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity
Cracker - I Hate My Generation
Tool - Message To Harry Manback
The Residents - Lottie The Human Log

yes, thanks. my bad, yet that's why i wrote that 96 lasted 24 months for me ha! so i could reasonably include the verve song as a "best".

but i have been duly chastised in another thread for doing the exact same thing. naming a track from 79 in a thread on 78 lol.

my transgressions are many, and please accept my sincere apologies. i am incorrigible.

That stuff is ok but it wouldn’t be favorite. Mine was probably something No Depression-ish at that time.

Me too...couldn't vote for anything else on the list. My interest in actual pop/chart-music startet to diminish from the mid-nineties.
I can see that by many cds I bought in the 90ies/2000ds and gave away by now which actually is very untypical for me. I just don't listen to them anymore and I need space for music that really interests me.

I voted for the 2 Sheryl Crow songs, Eric Clapton and Toni Braxton. Viewing the list I can see why I was listening to more country music then.

    Deana Carter - “Strawberry Wine”
    LeAnn Rimes - “One-way Ticket”
George Strait - “Blue Clear Sky”
Garth Brooks - ‘The Beaches of Cheyenne”
Jo Dee Messina- “Heads Carolina, Tails California”

    and on and on...

It has often been said that those who were disenfranchised by the pop/rock/R&B music of the 90s is why a lot of people fled to country music.

From that list, only George Michael's "Jesus To A Child." For something completely different, 1996 also brought the last great Van Halen song:
