Wise man with that grain of salt. In the context of the conversation we were having at the time, I thought it was clear I was making up a quote!

    In case it wasn't clear, that's a made-up quote.

Incidentally, the entire debate is moot as we now have a stereo mix that has the full approval of all remaining Beatles and the chosen designees of the unavailable ones. Ringo seems particularly thrilled by it.

Ringo likes it as long as you don't ask him to sign it.

I have no way right now of hearing the new 2017 mono unless it becomes available on stream or folks start selling off individual discs.
But honestly, I'm not all that curious.
Of course that would change if accessibility became more practical.

Is the 2017 mono CD a different mastering or mix from the 2009 mono box?

I was under the impression that it was the exact same.

The problem with these Pepper threads is that both vinyl and CD discussions are mixed in, and posters are making very little or no distinction of which format they are talking about.

I have both and it is a tough choice. Essentially mono works better, for me, on side one and stereo for side two, but given that I like the second side more, I vote stereo. "A Day in the Life", in particular, needs stereo for all the effects to really work. The mono sounds too compressed given the ambition of the song.

While the mono has it's good qualities, such as the phasing on "Lucy", it has a good amount of faults, like the horrible transitions from the title track into "With a Little Help" or "Good Morning" into the reprise. I'm saying it's a toss-up in favor of the stereo mix.

I had only listened to stereo for years, and only had a stereo vinyl copy until yesterday. I'd been waiting to listen to the mono until I found one in good enough condition, and yesterday was that day. What a different listening experience! The phasing on LSD really grabbed me especially.

The copy I found is a very clean 67 mono Scranton pressing. What is the general consensus "best" mono US pressing?

I predict the general consensus on a mono US will be "none, they are all crap". I think a Capitol mono is better than none.

Hah fair enough, sounds good enough to me. Much better than my 80's and 70's stereo pressings.

But why should that matter if we are talking about the mix?

It shouldn't. But mastering issues are also "mixed" up in it. :) That's when it becomes an issue. I know the mods want to keep the place tidy, but I think it does a disservice to have both digital and analog format discussion together simply because of human behavior.

I certainly have no issues with my original Capitol mono Pepper. Hell, the price was right, about $2.50! (purchased as part of a "lot" on eBay along with original mono Something New, '65 and Rubber Soul for $10)
