    Battle between :

    Jeff Beck,
    Ritchie Blackmore,
    Duane Allman,
    and Tony Iommi.

    .. ended up choosing :

    Beck & Blackmore

    * a different poll might've included
    jazz heavyweights :

    Earl Klugh
    John Scofield
    Allan Holdsworth
    Larry Coryell
    John McLaughlin
    Gabor Szabo
    Wes Montgomery
    Stanley Jordan
    Kenny Burrell
    Joe Pass
    Grant Green
    Larry Carlton
    Phil Upchurch
    Scott Henderson
    Shawn Lane
    Larry Carlton

.. in which case, Duane and Tony would have
dropped from the finals, beaten by Larry Coryell and Wes Montgomery; Ritchie Blackmore would have been edged out by Kenny Burrell; five choices would be required to fill a roster including Gabor Szabo.

I voted Peter Green for his work from 1966 to 70 but I'd have thought a bit harder if Hank Marvin was on the list.

  3. Why don't you just call it "Favorite Rock and Roll Guitarist"? No Jazz or Blues players on it. Not only that, everyone of those players is white. That's kind of messed up. Of the folks on your list, Zappa is my favorite.

  5. Just name it properly, that's all. Not a bad poll.

You're understating the diversity of this poll. Some of those guys are actually very white. Others, mostly the British ones, are merely pale.

To be honest, I've not heard of a couple of these guitar players :hide:, but I picked these two because I've been listening to their music ever since I was a little kid thanks to my dad's love of Queen and the blues.

Well, after almost 3 years my man Duane is less than 6 percent.

Time for y’all to put on Loan Me a Dime and correct this sad stat! :)

Out of curiosity... is Al Dimeola one of the most underrated by this forum? Sure he's famous... but 9/10 times when a discussion starts post 2 declares him to have no soul and post 3 declares him to be nothing more than technique.

I've listened to a fair amount of Dimeola -- and that is just not my listening experience. As such, underrated by this forum. So underrated he didn't even make this poll.

(I chose Jerry Garcia and Richard Thompson ... but on any given day I might have picked Gilmour or Howe.)

Voted for Jeff Beck & Peter Green, would've voted for Bill Frisell & Grant Green. After Hendrix, Charlie Christian, Django, and T-Bone Walker, who should all be givens as great guitarists. Some blues and country pickers would've been nice too.

I can maybe meet you half way there, the standard objections are at least half true but no more so than for any number of players who this forum likes better. Hows that? In other words, I've certainly enjoyed his playing from time to time in different contexts, but I don't seek it out.
