"Racing In The Street" has been eliminated.

Three tracks remain. One must go.

    Discussion Question:
Have you heard any Bruce Springsteen covers? If so, what did you think of them?

    4 Racing In The Street
    5 Prove It All Night
    6 Candy's Room
    7 Adam Raised A Cain (Round 2)
8 Something In The Night (Round 2)
9 Streets Of Fire (Round 1)
    10 Factory (Round 1)

    Title track again.

Is there a typo in the discussion question? Or are we really supposed to answer whether we have heard any Springsteen songs, in a thread dedicated to having heard at least 10 Springsteen songs? I'm confused!

    Badlands to go.

Seen Bruce twice - really can't remember the set list from either show as they were both more than 20 years ago. Would be surprised if he didn't play something from Darkness at either show.

Racing gone, this whole vote is a travesty! Badlands, Darkness and The Promised Land all weaker. But other opinions are available.

"Racing in the Street" is close to perfect. Oh well. "The Promise Land" is the weakest of the three that remain.

In answer to the discusion question, I have heard many Springsteen songs. I thought that some were good, some were not that good, but some were really, really good.

Ah, okay. That makes much more sense! My favorite Springsteen cover is Bat for Lashes doing 'I'm on Fire.'

    Darkness

DQ: lots of them, but I'll mention "Sandy" by the Hollies as one I really like.

  10. My favorite is Elvis Costello’s cover of “Brilliant Disguise”

    Promised Land.

I've always liked The Smithereens doing "Downbound Train". Jersey guys covering a Jersey guy:

    Promised Land (again)

DQ: A handful over the years. There is something classic about Manfred Mann's cover of "Blinded By The Light," even though it is bit ridiculous.

Darkness is not the strongest song on the album.

I'm a big fan of this:

I’ve heard The Band’s cover of “Atlantic City” but didn’t like it all that much.

DQ - Fire by the Pointer Sisters.

There was also a bit of fun or irony in Natalie Cole (or Bette Midler) covering Pink Cadillac, given the real meaning behind the lyrics...

had to vote our The Promised Land-brutal. as for DQ, off the top of my head I really like Natalie Merchant's cover of Because The Night from 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged.

    TPL should’ve gone before Racing.

Heard many many covers and have liked a lot of them. The Mavericks did a great version of “All That Heaven Will Allow” back in the mid-1990s.

Lots of Springsteen’s songs are too wordy, too long, or too personal, to allow for good covers. The best covers are of songs that are tighter and convey simpler, more universal emotions. The Pointer Sisters’ “Fire” and Patti Smith’s “Because the Night” are great covers, as are all of the various covers of “Tougher Than the Rest”, one of those songs that anyone can sing and it will sound great.

“Because The Night” is a Patti Smith / Bruce Springsteen co-write..........not Patti doing a cover version of a Bruce song.

Right. She took a discarded Bruce outtake from the Darkness sessions and changed the lyrics (with his permission). The version Bruce sings is the one with Patti's lyrical changes/additions.
