Fall on Me out.......but that's splitting hairs. These would be my final two.

Begin The Begin is a great beginning song and the beginning sounds like Ebony Eyes by Bob Welch but I'm still voting it off.

Fall On Me> Cuyahoga or Swan Swan H or I Believe or whatever...

Said who? There was an extensive favourite OPENING songs tourno here recently and Begin The Begin didn't make it through the first round.

Fair to say that it would have been up against OPENING album tracks from three other decades though.

Fall on Me winning is a shame

It's not bad but I'd probably put all the tracks below it up to I Believe and Swan Swan H ahead of it. It's not bad though it feels like the safest one on the record, good but not great for REM.

It’s somewhat of a let down that the singles always win these polls. Perhaps there should be a rule to omit them from these events?

Don’t get me wrong. I love the songs, but hey........there are better deep cuts especially on their earlier albums.

Final pairing: Begin the Begin and I Believe

I don't get this. If it's a good song, it's a good song, regardless of whether it was chosen as the single or not. It just means that in this case they got it right. I love every song on the album, but Fall On Me is probably my favorite REM song.

Two great, final songs; however, Fall On Me wins.

Said me- Spear and Magic Helmet. It felt so good, I'll say again. It was the finest opening track for any album release that decade....Even in the face of a SHF poll saying otherwise, my opinion remains unaltered.

Begin the Beguine for the win. Just learned this was the name of a 1935 song by Cole Porter!

DQ: The rockers---These Days and Just a Touch, with Hyena nipping at their heels.
I love the exuberance of these songs. :pineapple:

In that case, you should remain partial. If that's your view, that's all that matters.

    I picked Begin the Begin.

My final would be Fall on Me and Superman.

Yes, the singles but they would have been my favourites regardless of that and they weren’t typical radio fare in 1986.

I totally agree with this. Coyahoga is the heart and soul of this album. Everything else radiates from it. For it to get dropped so early DQs this poll. I demand a recount!
