Does emo count? I like my chemical romance first album and fall out boys from under the cork tree.

I also enjoy greenday dookie and insomniac as well as a few yellow card songs.

Green Day and Blink 182 are some of the biggest rock bands of the 90s & 2000s. I think a lot of people have heard of pop punk.

When pop punk is done well, it’s some of my favorite music. It’s done poorly so often, though. My tastes skew closer to the 90s Lookout/Epitaph/Fat style than the more emo influenced late 90s/2000s bands. When I have some actual time I’ll throw some links in here!

I was around then. Nobody called it Pop Punk then. I do recall some there hating on things like Hair Metal back in those dim olden days when you had to entertain yourself for minutes at a time waiting in line to buy a pack of......but I digress.

"Pop punk" makes me think of Screeching Weasel, since that's where I first heard the term come from (or rather Ben Weasel talked about it).

Uh.... you guys are WAY out of the loop. I'm not calling you guys posers or anything like that, but the term "pop punk" has been around for well over 30 years. Pick up a copy of Flipside or Maxinumrocknroll.

Green Day certainly was calked "pop punk" when they came out. I first heard the term in regards to the Descendents in 1986, though I would say the Dickies invented it in the late 70s. It could be argued that The Ramones are the pioneers.

It was mostly used to describe bands on Lookout Records. The Queers, Screeching Weasel, Green Day, etc... and has expanded to literally hundreds, if not thousands of bands these days.

I have to agree Pop Punk isn't good nomenclature. It's an much an oxymoron as Alternative Rock.

    A sub-genre of a sub-genre. Fringe jargon...pardon the redundancy.

I would say that actual punk/post-punk which happens to be catchy can be great.

I would also say that any band deliberately attempting to position themselves within a "pop-punk genre" is almost certainly going to be terrible.

Regardless, the term has been around for over 30 years. Yeah, it's been bastardized quite a bit (like Black Metal has) as time has gone on, but it's been around and has been written about for a long, long time.

I ran a record store in pop punk's heyday and can absolutely verify that people most certainly used the phrase going back to at least the early 90s.

Huh? Green Day, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, etc. were hugely popular back in the day.

I never thought of it as a "hated genre", but coming to this forum, I guess it really is! At least here, the most hateful place on earth. lol

Green Day was called "alternative" when they were around. Not once did I ever hear them called "pop punk" until I read this thread.

Is this the Twilight Zone? Green Day was like the textbook definition of a pop punk band through Dookie.
