Pop punk is great. IMO it isn't hated any more than say than some pop, hip-hop, metal or "emo". It's just a light-hearted offshoot of punk rock and hardcore.

Washington DC? You obviously never hung out at the 9:30 Club in 1989. Again, I'm not calling you a poser or anything, but you need to read up on history. Pick up an issue of Flipside or Maximumrocknroll (these are fanzines) from back in the day. You can find them on eBay.

Saw them a few times in my youth liked the shows a lot. The riverdales were also good during that era when they opened for greenday.

Uh no... Songs like this were the definition of Pop Punk when they were around (and they still ARE around):

I’ve always called it “Smooth Punk” because it seems to me to have the same relationship to Punk as “Smooth Jazz” does to Jazz.

How close to "power pop" is "pop punk?"

I don't remember hearing the phrase "pop punk" but it does immediately describe the genre and is perfectly fitting of some of the aforementioned bands.

I like just a very few bands.

Descendents are excellent (Milo goes to college). I like Mega city four too.

It should be noted that the list has albums going as far back as 1977. And they're not wrong.

I wouldn't say too close. I guess there can be some overlap. Power pop is more catchy pop with guitars and clean vocals. Pop punk is more like fast and catchy 2 minute songs, way more emphasis on "punk".

I really think new wave might as well = pop punk

Or at least synth pop, like, if you take "pop" and "punk" music that's basically what it is

Like, in the literal sense this is pop punk correct?

Honestly I'm not a big fan of the "Green Day" genre - perhaps a little too late in the game for this old punk rocker ;)

But I do like this sort of pop punk:

Allot also likely depends on the band aesthetic. Does the band look "punk?"

Yes, do they dress up to look like their dad circa 1978?

Until this evening I had never heard of a genre called "pop punk".

Not only a fantastic pop punk song, but one of my favorites of all time.

You've never heard of the quite popular Blink 182 being called pop punk? AllMusic even has them listed as that.

EDIT: Okay, I see you're from Europe. Maybe those bands weren't as popular over there.

Superchunk, one of my favorite indie bands, can probably be categorized as pop punk. I really like em. Their drummer is a monster, and I really like the way they play and that they largely avoid ballads.
I saw em three times in the past couple years, including flying to North Carolina to see em. Great live band.
