    Redoing it:

Pioneer PL-L800 Linear Tracking Turntable ($100, used)
    --Audio Technica AT440MLa ($180, new)

Little Bear T10 Tube Phono Preamp ($65)
--Voskhod 6N2P-EV Driver Tubes ($20, NOS matched trio)
--Reflector 6C4P-EV Rectifier Tube ($20, NOS)

    Schiit Modi 2 DAC ($80, new B-stock)
    Schiit SYS Switch ($50, new)
Schiit Wyrd USB Filter ($60, used)

Little Dot MKII Headphone Amp/Preamp ($110, used)
--Lorenz C3G Driver Tubes ($40, NOS matched pair)
--Sylvania 6SN7GTB Power Tubes ($35, NOS matched pair)
--Tube adapters ($40 for 4, new)

Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones ($200, new)

Sanyo DCX-685 Receiver (free, from my dad)
KLH 970A Passive Speakers (free, from my dad) w/ subwoofer from Cyber Acoustics CA-3090 PC speakers ($20)

$1020, built up over a span of about 3 and a half years. I guess it's not really budgetphile anymore, it's somewhere in mid-fi. But that number doesn't take into account the things I've had before this and stopped using or gave away:

BSR 810 Transcription Turntable (free, used)
    --Shure M92 Cartridge (free, used)
--Audio Technica AT92ECD Cartridge ($20, new)
    Technics SL-D3 Turntable ($100, used)
--Audio Technica AT95e Cartridge ($40, new)
Schiit Fulla USB DAC/Headphone Amp ($70, new)
    Koss PRODJ200 Headphones ($120, new)
Audio Technica ATH-M50R Headphones ($100, new open box)
Superlux HD 681 EVO Headphones ($50, new)
Sennheiser HD598 Headphones ($100, new open box)
Voskhod 6ZH1P-EV Driver Tubes ($16, NOS matched pair)
Yugoslavia EI 6HM5 Driver Tubes ($9, NOS matched pair)
Novosibirsk 6H6P-IR Power Tubes ($45, NOS matched pair)

So that's another $670 on stuff I don't even use anymore. Yikes. The most "budgetphile" I ever went was:

BSR 810 Transcription Turntable (free, used)
    --Shure M92 Cartirdge (free, used)
Sanyo DCX-685 Receiver (free, from my dad)
--1/8" to stereo RCA cable for PC audio to receiver (free, just had it laying around)
KLH 970A Speakers (free, from my dad)

BIC v-630's. this is my setup i use to record into my computer when i record LP to CD.

i use the speakers to listen when i record, as its fun to hear the albums in their entirety. i don't often have the time, so when i record, i make sure i use those speakers. Those old mid 90's early 2000 V series sure sound good.
I have a pair of t he v830 and v630 our something like that. great lil speakers.

I've been enjoying the heck out the 1976 BIC 960 that I recently bought for less than a dinner for two. These turntables are very underrated.

my cousin still has his, not as much use these days, ut it still works, and, its well over 40 years old.

the newer incarnations of BIC speakers sound good, but look atrocious.
i have (had both) pairs dv-84 & 64's the tweeters were so bright, but man did they sound great when i cut up s piece of old t-shirt, and taped it over t he tweeter carefully, then they were amazing.
VIFA tweeters in the newer ones. only have the dv64's left, gave away the 84's to my cousin who needed speakers. happy to keep them in the family.

Set this up in my daughter's room:

Pioneer pm514 turntable with Stanton500 gold cart and Pickering elliptical stylus d-5-e

    Arcam alpha 3 amp

    Denon/mission speakers

The sound is crystal clear and she loves it! I only paid for the stylus and cart. The amp and turntable were off free cycle and I took the speakers out of the electrical bin at the local dump! True story.

    I’m currently using a Yamaha rx-v490

Good enough for the BIC speakers and recording albums into computer to record to CD.

    Sony STR-D590 Receiver

Not so much a budget systen more a 1st midlife crisis kinda system!

Rega Planar 3 (2016) with an Exact cart fitted.
    Vincent PHO-8 Pre amp.
    Cambridge Audio CXA 80 amp.
    Dali Zensor 1s speakers.
Apple Mac hooked up to amp for digital input.

In total it's cost around the £2000 mark with cables. Got a substantial discount on speakers & amps on Black Friday from Richersounds.

Puts out a really deep open warm sound. Very happy.

    Sony PS-X50 turntable, $100 from a friend
Signet TK3 cart, free on a table a neighbor gave me
ATN12s stylus, $50 from someone on Audiogon
Technics SU-V6, free from a Craigslist lot, $80 repair made
Dynaco A25 speakers, $15 yard sale

There are other pieces of similar provenance I could swap in there. There's a $100 Thorens in the garage that I need to put new RCAs on, for example.
