Yes, it is pretty short, but the contributors are very dedicated so I use it based on knowing that these members really know what they're doing. Partially my fault as well not checking. Happy holidays!

I you use the search box, you can put a checkmark at "Search This Thread Only" to restrict your search. A very useful option. Most of the time the most recent post containing your search terms will be on top in the results page. That's the easiest way to find the post with the latest version of our list. :righton:

The list might be short but it's relatively complete, concerning western releases. What is missing?
Mainly, Japanese domestic releases, because no one besides me is adding them. There should be hundreds more titles.
Also, small label/private issues that were made in small quantities. Just guessing there.
Also, classical releases, because there were so many of them and also not much people are checking and reporting them here.

I just listened to it and I am not too sure if it has Pre-emphasis. I have a CDEPC 83468 that contains the remixes of Rock With You and Get On The Floor, does anyone know if that exact version has pre-emphasis?

If it doesn’t have 35.8P… in the matrix, it doesn’t have pre-emphasis. It’s probably the made in Austria disc with the same catalogue number as the made in Japan disc, Michael Jackson - Thriller .

can I find the matrix close to the hole of the CD? It says 'Mastered by DADC Austria' https://i.imgur.com/gx4sAnO.jpg

So, no pre-emphasis? It sounds very good though, very rich and full. Is it known to be a lesser copy?

I was chatting with Y9771 on Discord who told me about pre-emphasis on CDs and linked me here. I had no idea this was present on CDs and immediately checked my older releases to see if they had it. My copy of Heaven 17's The Luxury Gap has pre-emphasis and is a different pressing from what's already been posted here. My copy is CDV2253 on Virgin, barcode 5012981225322, and has copyright 1983 listed. The CD was made in the UK and has the matrix "CDV2253 100721 02 %".

Please let me know how this should be officially added to the list or anything that I need to do to verify or report the pre-emphasis, and I'll respond with anything necessary ASAP.

That's a later mastering, very common, no pre-emphasis, good sound but doesn't contain all the original mixes.

It’s a fine copy, like @Andreas said. More importantly, do you think it sounds fine? No pre-emphasis on this on, so no postprocessing needed after ripping.

The text in the inner ring of the disc includes the matrix number. For this disc it is “CDEPC-83468 31”. The “Mastered by DADC Austria” is a nice addition, but not many pressing plants include such a message. Additionally, if you look at the text at 3 o’clock on the disc face, you will see it says “Made in Austria” on the bottom line.

From a cursory search of the Discogs forum, it doesn't look like there's ever been a proposal to add a field to indicate the presence of PE on a compact disc. (Anyone see otherwise?) It seems like a good idea to me. Does anyone know if that feature has been explicitly ruled out in the past? If not, I'll consider bringing it up there.

(I haven't been an active Discogs user for very long, so I am still getting to know the customs and rules there; I don't want to bring it up if that's actually a bad idea. ;) )

In other news, I am working on an updated list for here. (I think the last update was in March; let me know if I missed one.)

Include it in Notes or maybe even in Free Text.

That's the easiest path, and I suspect it's already been noted for various titles. It would be great if the data were more structured, so one could, say, filter all the discs with PE in one's collection.

At least as of iTunes v12.9 on OSX, iTunes does properly de-emphasize CDs including those marked only in subcode. I ripped The Jacksons - Triumph today using both dBPowerAmp CD Ripper and iTunes. The iTunes files compared with the dBPowerAmp files in WaveLab show a marked decrease in treble and very different peak and average loudness levels indicative of de-emphasis. I know this is a reply to an older post but this is good info to share regardless.

I have the list data updated and in spreadsheet form; I just need to think about the best way to present it here. (I'd prefer something other than the plain text that we've used here, because it's unwieldy to maintain.) It might be sensible to host it somewhere (a Google sheet or similar), and then perhaps a few of us here could have permission to edit and maintain it.

Meanwhile, here is a raw dump of the TSV (tab-separated values) data, which you can cut-and-paste into a spreadsheet of your own for viewing. Rather than trying to coerce the various entries into a complicated format, I've settled on <artist> <title> <notes>. If you see any corrections (very possible!), DM them to me or just note them here.

Regarding the pre-emphasis list. I happen to have rips of my Howard Jones' CDs on my computer, and checked them out. The copy that I have is NOT just pre-emphasized, but is DolbyA encoded. It sounds like pre-emphasis, but has HF compression. I put up two of the songs from Howard Jones songs after being DolbyA decoded -- they are short snippets, but get the point across. One is from the 'Human's album and hte other is from "Dream into Action' Unfortunately, my rips are mp3 - but enough of the material is retained that the decoding works fine. My CDs are in storage, so I don't know the particulars, but they are most likely US domestic releases.

I didn't set the calibration super carefully -- they sound 'okay', but might use some tuning. Sometimes the calibration has to be set withiin about 0.1dB for the best quality, and I could be as far off as a dB or so witih these examples. If I was doing whole albums, I could probably make it sound really good...

I did a little more careful decoding (still not 100% sure), also supplying samples of the original and the decoded versions on the repository. The original has 'Orig' in the filename, and 'DHDA' is decoded from the DolbyA encoded form by the DHNRDS decoder. Note that I ran three 45 second segments 60 seconds apart just to be nice and legit (for each of two songs.)

However, if you listen carefully, and need to do A/B comparison -- the 'Orig' version sounds okay until you listen to the DHDA version. If you go 'back and forth' a few times, you might notice that the 'Orig' version has compressed highs, and the DHDA generally sounds more 'natural' (however natural the material can sound :)).

Very often -- these 'compressed highs' superficially sound like too much pre-emphasis, but if you listen to the decoded version -- it should become clear that the signal is encoded with an NR system called 'DolbyA'. It is IMPOSSIBLE to recover the sound just with some de-emphasis, but it is better to do so than just to leave the 'brash' & 'harsh' sound of DolbyA encoding fully intact. (Sometimes the distributors apply their own de-emphasis, so that can make it more challening to do a proper DolbyA decoding -- sometimes I have to add a few dB of 3k and/or 9k to be able to properly decode the material.)

Add an additional pressing for Nena "99 Luftballons." I long have been chasing a 35・8P or CSR Japan for US pressing on this title -- in order to get the original pre-emphasis mastering. But that 35 8P matrix disc has eluded me for the right price. Well, I got in and ripped today an early DADC pressing, and pre-emphasis popped up in the TOC. So, at least some early DADC also carry pre-emphasis.

Comments: DI8P 50042 21A1 neat font; DADC center hub; upside down triangle on disc; pre-emphasis flags in TOC; 1983, 1984 CBS; Disc manufactured in Japan by CBS/Sony; no Now Made In The U.S.A. on back inlay; white disc tray

Anyone with a 35 8P matrix disc likely should be able to confirm the mastering metrics below:

    Edit:

Another interesting twist. I thought that I noticed this when I was checking the DR Database and now have confirmed it with one of my own rips. The IFPI repressing, circa early 2000s, appears to be just a -1.2 dB level shift. But here is the kicker -- it retains the pre-emphasis mastering yet loses all pre-emphasis flags. Sony mastered the repressing from an old PCM 1600 tape or from an extant CD, consistently cut the levels across all tracks, and did not apply digital de-emphasis.

    Code:
    Analyzed: Nena / 99 Luftballons

    Nice find!
Took me forever to find a CMU Pitman Journey-Escape, sure enough it carried over.
Think it's the only Pre CMU disc I've come across.

See edit above. Looks like the "99 Luftballons" pre-emphasis mastering can be found secretly on most/all EK 39294, even recent repressings. So, maybe not a hard find if all one wants is the original mastering -1.2 dB.

Well crap, isn't that something. Lazy lazy
Thinking this was probably accidentally missed with Petty's Southern Accents. I picked up one from a Walmart bargain bin a couple years ago. IFPI PE-SUB Q
Wonder if that Nena un eq'd mastering made it's way to the digital download arena.
I do have a later Lionel Richie that carry's I think the same levels as the old pre disc without any tags.

Enjoy your disc and don't bother with an original 35・8P. I have one and mine doesn't have pre-emphasis flags although the mastering needs it. Very irritating. Corrected it digitally, for streaming purposes, but playing the disc itself on my main system makes no sense, of course. :sigh:

But which 35・8P do you have? There are two with similar content.

    "Nena" [35・8P-38]
"Nena (International Album)" aka "99 Luftballons" [35・8P-42]

As far as I know, only the latter has been reported to include pre-emphasis.

Both 35DP and 35・8P were positioned in the early 1980s as state of the art, premium disc series. I would be surprised if an honest to goodness 35DP, 35・8P, 38DC, etc., were mastered with pre-emphasis -- but missing both subcode and TOC flags.
