It’s great you posted a picture. :righton:
...and if you would be so kind to type the CDs in a post, the data would also become searchable. :hide:

Are you sure pre-emphasis was detected on that Brothers in Arms?

I've heard claims that it is one of those that should have pre-emphasis, but I've never heard anyone claim that flags were actually detected.

If so, what is in the matrix?

Ah, we don't include those on our list. Interesting to talk about, but this list is only CD's that have actual flags for can positively be identified to be identical mastering to one that does have flags.

So, unless you verify they actually have flags in the subcode, please don't say that they do.

Ok! I try to detect it on another DAC - my current Esoteric D-70VU dont have indicator of pre-emphasis, and I based on my hearing.
CDs from my last listing all detected PRE flag on EAC.

PE flags not detected in TOC, but I can confirm that this was mastered with pre-emphasis by listening comparing the CD played on a CD player with the extracted files.

I don't know which version of BIA you tested here, but I own the exact mastering that you linked to on Discogs (same barcode at least), and I just tested it with both EAC as well as with my foolproof method of feeding the output of my Sony CD player into my Direct Stream DAC (which has an indicator), and neither method identified preemphasis on this CD.

Found it today, but after listening I think I like the later “classical” version better. On the other hand, I know the Deutsche Grammophon version better, so it’s kind of a biased comparison, currently.

BTW, does your copy also have “tape problems”? Like the stereo image narrowing a couple of times at the end of America?

I have purchased the Black Sabbath - Master of Reality (Creative Sounds, made in Canada). I've read it somewhere that this eddition has pre-emphasis, but it doesn't show in EAC. Can anyone enlighten me? Thank you.

The Zoolook release your linking to (the "03" matrix) does not have pre-emphasis. On the "02" matrix, some tracks have it. This is the correct entry for that.

I don't remember whether it does or not.
I have both this version and "classical DG" version (btw the latter CD came in smooth edge case, maybe one of last titles to do so), I think I liked original more.

Guys, please, someone suggest me an external cd drive that I can use to detect sub-coded pre-emaphasis cds on my 1998 laptop. I have that specific prebeta EAC that runs flawlessly on that ancient laptop but my 2018 made external usb cd drive won't detect subcoded preemphasis discs. I'm told that only older cd drives models will be able to read those discs properly. How you guys detect sub-coded cds? Thanks in advance. (I was going through my cd collection to check them on my old laptop and the internal disc drive died on me halfway through.)

P.S.: Also, what's the verdict on Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms first press cd? Is it pre-emphasized? Thank you

Why not just replace the internal drive? they are usually of one of few standards so it wouldn't be hard to get another one fitting. Just unscrew one or two screws on laptop bottom and you can take it out to replace. The cover can be taken off and put on the replacement drive.

No, not yet. I have tried a quite a few external cd drives but no luck. However, I might be able to get ahold of a vintage cd player that has emphasis sign on the display when such disc is being played so I might just get that and stop playing trial and error with sundry usb cd drives!

I have a vintage Toshiba 1612K drive which detects some disks. But it still only can tell me which CDs have pre-emphasis about 50% of the time. So this is not a reliable way to determine this. If you didn't already have such a nice vintage DAC, I'd tell you to look for a DAC which tells you when CDs have pre-emphasis.

And BIA does not have preemphasis.
