Any info about this albums on early cds : Alphaville "Forever Young" and "Sticky Fingers" from Rolling Stones ?..

  2. kevin5brown

    kevin5brown Analog or bust.

The CBS for Sticky Fingers does not have PE. It is simply a hair too bright. I think the SHM with the HR cutting from the DSD master sounds the best.

Alphaville, Forever Young, target disc, doesn't have pre-emphasis. So the rest won't have it either.

Here is a data dump of 125 albums with Pre-Emphasis. I'm about half way finished ripping pre-emphasis CDs and summer work is taking over my database updates, so here is what I have thus far until next winter. It is hard to place a table inline, so I withheld a lot of fields of data. The information is searchable, so I hope it helps.

Note that De-Emphasizing CDs with Pre-Emphasis changes DR and EAC peak values.

I am happy overall with the results. I kept the original Pre-Emphasis files (within subdirectories) and imported the De-emphasized files into Roon. All-in-all, there were remarkable sound improvements for more than a few albums.

Has there ever been a software “shootout” for de-emphasis done on this board? Or anywhere else, for that matter? Either subjectively - through listening tests, or objectively via comparison of the wav files to an identical “pre-pre-emphasis” version after software de-emphasis?

I wonder if there were ever any “test CDs” released in the pre-emphasis era that we could play around with.

The albums I listened to were night and day difference. Note, in the past, forum members have posted CDs that were above average or better quality listening preferences. Some of them are Pre-Emphasis... well when I listened to them, I was perplexed... until I De-Emphasized them. See above posted Pink Floyd album recommended by George P. Note... I have never owned a CD player... just a DAC with an ethernet connection to a file server... so I was only recently aware of the substantial difference in sound quality.

Except for Itunes (awful for the PE curve) Most of or if not all are based on SOX parameters. I've tested a few and would fail a blind test.
Think there is an old Izotope program with a curve, couple members swear it's the best. I haven't heard it.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to miss, since there's a huge high-end EQ boost when the audio's not properly de-emphasized. (With a few exceptions, of course - namely the ones that may not be tagged properly and have been discussed here at SH.tv quite a bit).

What software are you using to apply the de-emphasis? (or is it POST emphasis? [wink] )

    Good to know.

Honestly, I've never had much interest in the subject before, because I only had a couple PE discs, but now that I'm collecting a few more I'd like to find the best software method so I can get some good digital files.

There is such a quality difference in DAW EQ software, so it seems like there would be varying quality in applying a de-emphasis curve. I've used SOX for resampling and have had good results with it. I've used Izotope plugins with Sound Forge - I'll have to look and see if there's a de-emphasis EQ in there.

Honestly I just want to find something that will apply the EQ in the most non-destructive manner, and I was hoping someone had figured out what that is.

Cool! Do you know of any specific titles that have pre-empasis? I would love to find some and run some software tests.

I use the SOX filter via dBpoweramp. I'm not sure why anyone would use anything but the SOX filter (Sound eXchange, the Swiss Army knife of audio manipulation).

As far as I can recall, it's been the most used filter for at least 20 years--although there are forum members that are FAR more knowledgeable than I. I had always wanted to apply the filter, but until I started using dBpoweramp, it seemed like any process would be to complex (for me).

I had hoped Roon would implement something... and NOPE... they are busy correcting the latest release issues. BTW... I tag my files (Albums) with "De-Emphasis" in the Genre tag to easily locate them in Roon.

I use CUERipper (free) to test for Pre-Emphasis in subcode). I apply De-Emphasis with dBpoweramp CD Ripper and save as FLAC files on server. Note that I chose the more difficult yet permanent conversion solution. I know foobar2000 offers another solution. Some forum members in Roon have opted for filter solution--a bit complex for me. I guess it all depends on your available time and the music software used to play files.

I use SoX too. I've found that SoX works well enough for de-emphasis that I'm doubtful that anything better would actually sound better.

The unfortunate reality with pre-emphasis is that pre-emphasis was used because the AD converters were not very good. The AD converters back then weren't able to do the high frequencies as well as the mids and bass. So they applied pre-emphasis to the highs so the highs would have more signal and hence bit-depth to work with.

The effect of that is that since the AD converters weren't very good and didn't have very good resolution transparency (the ability to hear into the recording) the quality of the digital de-emphasis isn't so critical unless the digital de-emphasis is really poor quality. Poor quality digital de-emphasis causes the result to have even less stereo separation and resolution transparency than the poor quality AD converters did natively. Good quality digital de-emphasis only needs to be better than the resolution transparency of the AD converters back then. Going higher quality won't result in better sound. You can only polish a turd so much. And those old AD converters were turds.

So my view now is that there is no need or benefit to going to heroic levels of math and precision and preserving proper phase changes to do digital de-emphasis. Cause the old AD converters that had pre-emphasis didn't have the resolution transparency to make the heroic better de-emphasis methods audibly better than just using SoX.

The old versions of iTunes did a poor job of de-emphasis that was audibly inferior. Not good. SoX is good and has better resolution transparency than the AD converters used to do pre-emphasis. I've yet to hear a digital de-emphasis that does a better job of polishing the pre-emphasis turd.

also... reread a 2nd time and need to mention de-emphasis almost always results in peak values and DR values to be lower. This, of course, is perhaps the opposite of the results some people may expect--mainly because the DR values typically are less, yet the sound is better.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread or not, but have run into a couple of unusual pre-emphasis CD's in the last two days.

First off, got a copy of "A Flock of Seagulls" yesterday that has SID codes and still has pre-emphasis.

Second, today got a copy of Rainbow's "Catch the Rainbow: The Anthology" from @WarEagleRK that has one single track with pre-emphasis.
