    Perhaps post Covid blues.
In the 1930s .. depression era, Hollywood was churning out classics.

In the VHS days, I used to buy used tapes from Blockbuster Video. Before I sold off my collection early in 2000, I had 3,800 pre-recorded VHS tapes.

I built a data base to keep track of them. I had them in different categories. One category was the classics, from the early silent days, Birth of a Nation in 1915 to 1960, which is when the studio system and contracts were winding down. I had 600-tapes in the classics collection. One of my favorite parts!

The Woman King was excellent. I am guessing that is the film you are commenting about

I wasn't commenting about any film in particular.

Though the Woman King is no different than any other fantasy movie, not based on reality...

    Information on The Woman King.

    The Woman King - Wikipedia

The Woman King is a 2022 American historical epic film about the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries. Set in the 1820s, the film stars Viola Davis as a general who trains the next generation of warriors to fight their enemies. It is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens, based on a story she wrote with Maria Bello. The film also stars Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, and John Boyega.

Woo-hoo! I made the list with The 13th Warrior. ;)

It would have been a much better picture if Disney hadn’t taken final cut away from McTiernan and given it to that pompous pain Michael Crichton. But Crichton was on fire at the time and Disney figured John wouldn’t sue (he didn’t) because he’d never work for them (or any of their “friends”) again even though McT had final cut approval written into his Touchstone contract.

John finally did manage to get Crichton kicked off the set (and all of Canada, for that matter!) but Crichton got his revenge when we did a month of additional photography (at Point Dume, the derelict Marineland property and some funky stage in Santa Clarita) with Michael directing.

Due to guild regulations, McT (being the director of record) had the right to be present and rode Crichton like a pony the entire time: “Oh, that’s a great f***ing shot! How the f*** did I miss doing one of those back in Campbell River?!?”

It was gold, pure gold, I tells ya!

Oh well, at least I got to play chess with Omar Sharif in between setups during the weeks he was there. He tried to explain bridge to us back at the hotel but, well…

I'm no expert but I have seen several videos on YouTube by African Americans saying these women were responsible for a huge number of people being captured and sold to slavers, by all accounts this is mostly what they did, and they were saying that absolutely we should not be celebrating these women at all. In reality it is a terrible story. They argue the facts have been completely twisted to portray a story of them as heroes of some kind.

I'm kind of reluctant to see it for these reasons really.

Odd, looks like they're trying to attract an easily titillated audience who should then 'tsk tsk' at the excess.

"The opposition to the rule of God by world powers or the exile of God's people from the land of blessing is conveyed properly through the metaphor of Babylon" So, is he exploring that metaphor, or is this just a mindless barrage of decadence disguised as 'meaningful'? IDK, maybe the trailer is not representative

While it was not one of the most financially-successful films of the year, we were really impressed with Everything, Everywhere All at Once, which I thought was a remarkable film given that it only cost $25M (but wound up making over $100 million). I think the studio is very happy with that movie.

So how did Avatar end up for the first week of its rerelease?

Better or not as good as expected or about as expected.

It finished 3rd in the domestic market as predicted and #1 worldwide beating Don't Worry Darling. For a re-release I think Disney would be quite happy with the results, Avatar's domestic opening weekend beat the opening weekends for the following 5 re-releases combined (Spider Man NWH - Jaws - E.T. - Rogue One - Godfather).

I agree they must be very happy with the financial performance, the studios portion of the domestic gross alone more than covered the production costs and probably a good chunk of the marketing budget.

    Grosses
    DOMESTIC (70.2%)
    $69,999,016
    INTERNATIONAL (29.8%)
    $29,762,092
    WORLDWIDE
    $99,761,108
