The President Carter one has been fun, but President Nixon also watched some good movies, which was probably easy to do, since there were SO many great movies in the late 60s, early 70s.

Please chime in with thoughts, and little investigations. People noticing what he watched twice, or when they were viewed (holiday, etc).

Interesting........there are no specific dates for 1974. Watergate was taking its toll, and Nixon had lost much of his support causing him to resign on August 9, 1974. It would be intriguing to see what he was watching around this time.

These lists (Carter and Nixon) don't strike me as anything special, pretty much what adults were watching, presumably curated by a staff member. If you want to see something impressive, check out Teddy Roosevelt's reading list.

I'd love one, and I barely read! (I love lists like these)

1776. Its a well known fact that 1776 film got edited heavily because of, in his view, that Conservative values were being mocked. One major song and about a half hour of footage were excised because Nixon whined to Jack Warner. Should of been in early 1972....

A lot of westerns in there. That's back when they were still popular.

Saw it twice in April 1970, right around the time he sent the army into Cambodia. I remember it being much commented on at the time.

Do you think it was a powerful enough movie to influence his behavior?

It wouldn't surprise me; IIRC David Frost asked him about it in the infamous Frost/Nixon interviews in the late seventies and he said he liked the movie as a character study of Georgie. If it did influence his decision I can't imagine he'd own up to it on national TV.

Bill Clinton’s reading/viewing lists would be interesting. He’s a lot smarter than his Bubba persona suggests.

So, is anyone going to do one of these for Howard Hughes?

I think his favorite movie is "High Noon" and wouldn't surprise me if he had a list out there somewhere.

Nixon was a very serious reader, especially in the mid 60s when he was practicing law. Stuff like St Augustine, Montaigne, Marcus Aurelius. W was very high volume, mostly pop history. Bubba? I know he was a fan of Leaves of Grass.

You should start a thread like this for books - I'd love to check it out, and check what they read.

So I’ve seen this list and the one for President Carter... and the question I come away with is... are these lists what these Presidents watched (and how do we know that they were there), or are these lists what was scheduled to be shown in the WH movie room... regardless of who (if anyone) was in attendance?

For some reason I find it hard to believe anyone serving in that office had that much time to watch that many movies... regardless of political affiliation.

Honestly these lists read more like a menu, not a bill. So to speak.

I think these lists are more like what these Presidents had an opportunity to view on-prem, not what they actually sat through.
