Gene was many things. Included among those is "master songwriter." But the only time Gene was ever funky was when he was on a bender and five days removed from his last shower.
I am SO excited for this release.... wow!! of course there are reasons to complain as there always will be, but this amount of outtakes plus 2 live shows is bliss For me disc 2 is almost completely useless and unlistenable. Who wants to listen to 2 1999 edits, one of them in mono, in a row? Or Let's Pretend We're Married? I have never noticed a ddifference in the video versions of Automatic and Let's Pretend… Also, what's the logic of including audio versions of videos but not the videos themselves when there's enough room on the dvd? I will replace it with my own cdr which will include the b-sides, Little Red Corvette dance mix and other outtakes from the 81-82 years not included on the box.
Actually, the Detroit show that is circulating with excellent sound is the first show that day, the second show is on the new box. One difference in the tracklisting. On the circulating bootleg track 8 is Lady Cab Driver, on the box set track 8 is Automatic.
I’m so pumped for this set! I wish they had released a super deluxe vinyl set for Purple Rain. It would have been great to have those previously unreleased tracks on vinyl.
Also, I’m glad that 1999: The New Master isn’t anywhere on this set. Prince, I love you, but that wasn’t the best moment.
I LOVE the cover art and hope it’s spot-glass or foil or something fun like that, but durable. And of course I hope for purple vinyl. My order for the LP and 5 cd sets are in with my fave local too What a great year in music this is turning out to be!
I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re correct in your suspicion that line is what disqualified the track. But, if so, there could have been other options. They could have just mixed it out, or even faded the track a couple minutes early (it’s pretty repetitive at that point). It wouldn’t have pleased the purists but might have been an acceptable price to pay if that was the only way the estate and/or WB felt comfortable with the track’s inclusion.
Very helpful. Thanks! Would you also please update the release date in the thread title to November 29th?
As far as these things tend to be priced, the 5CD seems pretty reasonable at a list price of $69.98. Not as affordable as the (smaller) Purple Rain set, but much cheaper than most other Super Deluxe-type boxes of similar size and profile.
I would bet the quality will be in line with the Springsteen and Who DVD’s from Houston and they weren’t very good. I could live with substandard video quality but need to have high quality audio, I don’t see that happening, hope I’m wrong.
One can only imagine how much material there is that we haven't even heard from 86-87 along with the avalanche of stuff that's circulating.
