This seems too good to be true. One of my fav albums ever and now its in 24/192?

How can this be when Prince has the master tapes in his vault?

Some rumours Prince regained the copyright to pre-Rain albums.

    Or it's an upscale.

Has HDTracks sold any up-sampled albums with a 24/192 option before?

That would be a joke. Receivers can upscale(such as new Yamaha 3020).

If this is not remastered there would be no point.

I would guess that this is the same master use for the 180g vinyls. I've only listened to the previews, but it sure sounds like it.

Is that a good thing? I remember hearing that Prince had the albums he owned remastered but Im not sure but it is true that he has regained the rights to those albums, at least as far as I know. Has anyone bought it? Is the mastering good??

I think the 180g vinyl sounds pretty good, if bright (which seems to be a decision made during the recording). Someone took my original vinyl, so I only have the CD to compare it to and the vinyl is better than the CD (IMHO).

What was the source for the reissue vinyl? Either they used the original stampers or Prince gave access to the masters and that would be newsworthy.

I bought it at Music Direct and here is a quote from their page on this LP (no wonder it sounds so good!):
Mastered from the Original Tapes: Lacquers Cut by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering
Pressed at RTI and Features Complete Reproduction of Original Packaging: An Audiophile Spectacular

Any confirmation that the HDtracks uses the Vinyl mastering, gonna buy it anyway though, the samples sound much better than the regular CD to me. Anyone think buying the 192/24 is worth the extra money charged?

Gee, give the guy a break. Maybe he didn't have the time yet to give it a proper listen. At least now we know it's not compressed in comparison to the old CD.

Most people who have heard them agree with my theory that it's the 180g vinyls master. So the source is most likely WB's copy from Prince's original.

If this is the case, hopefully we'll get Dirty Mind, Controversy and Purple Rain soon.

The 180g vinyl sounds excellent, very clean and dynamic, with great bass (if a bit bright, as I alluded to above). Would LOVE to hear Prince's original, if the LP was NOT in fact cut from the original analog tapes!

To quote Michael Stipe from 1985 when Rolling Stone magazine asked what the new R.E.M. album sounded like: "Two oranges being nailed together."

^ I apologize in advance for the non-sequitur, but it's the first thing I always think of now when someone asks "What does it sound like?"

A prince.org member reported [bottom of page] emailing Bernie Grundman Studios in 2011 about the vinyl remasters and received this reply:
"Yes those titles were remastered at our studio by Bernie. We received the original tapes and remastered them, using the original first pressings as references.
We did the work back in January of this year."

From SoundStageDirect: "After more than two decades of being out of print, 1999 is finally back on vinyl--and how. Mastered from the original tapes, with lacquers cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, and pressed at RTI on 180g double vinyl, this is the very best version you'll ever hope to hear."

I also remember reading Grundman was did this specifically for the vinyl releases. How would that include later hi-rez releases?

I don't really like downloads, but I think I am going to have to get this one and burn it to a DVD. It's about time we get a digital remaster of Prince, and from the comments here, it appears that we got a good one.

It's a shame that a remaster of Purple Rain is unlikely since Prince doesn't have the rights to it.

If this hi-rez IS from Bernie's 2011 redo, they should make Dirty Mind available as well, the improvement on that one is by far the best of the bunch.
