I really like this effect to enhance stereo sources on my Sherwood digital receiver. It produces an artificial surround effect but it doesn't sound bad at all - in fact, it adds quite a bit of additional dimension to pretty much everything I play. Not sure exactly how it works but I assume it's some sort of delay going on?

I agree. PLIIx does a nice job especially on most studio mixed rock. The separation is quite amazing. A great example is the song "Owner of a lonely Heart" from Yes' 90210 CD. You'll swear you're listening to a 5.1 mix! Lead vocals come from the center spkr while backing vocals/effects are directed to the rear . Other keboard/percussion FX seem to move all around you at times...very cool!
I'm no expert but I believe it is certain recording effects(delay, phasing) that when used while mixing the album enables the PLII decoder to seperate the channels out this way.....
