That's my answer also. As a bass player, I find the stereo mix to be distracting on a lot of the songs. There are too many songs with the drums in one ear and the bass guitar in the other ear. The mono is more cohesive rhythmically.

I do like the stereo, also though, despite the wierdness of some of the mixes described above! If I was listening to the stereo I'd listen either the 30th Anniversary version or the original fat boy since those are what I have. They are both the same master; the fatboy is easier to get off the shelf and put in my player, but the 30th is more of an "event", recalling my old vinyl version from back in the day (long gone) with the mini-poster and such.

I'm hoping for a vinyl re-release of this album.

Steve, why do you like the original CD set better than the '09 remaster?

I grew up with the stereo mix, but the rock songs on this album such as "Helter Skelter" and "Me and My Monkey" sound great on the new mono CD.

My go-to White Album is an original US stereo Apple lp, though.

  4. I'll either do the 2009 stereo or mono. I still have my 30th Annniversary Edition and original CD as well as there are some tracks I prefer the mastering on there.

There was some subtle differences between the two. Whether or not its audible has been debated many times.

  7. Didn't the 30th Anniversary issue fix a glitch in Happiness Is A Warm Gun? That's the only difference I'm aware of although their could certainly be others.

My vote is for the 2009 remaster for digital, original/early UK vinyl for analog.

No. Not another rather pointless Beatles thread.

    My favorite Beatles album.

    I own:

    2009 stereo remaster CD
    2009 mono remaster CD
    30th anniversary CD
    European import DMM vinyl
    original double cassette

Of those I enjoy the 2009 mono remaster for sounding the freshest to me, but probably play the 2009 stereo remaster the most.

I think Steve has stated more than once that the original CD version is basically a flat transfer from the master tapes, so I can understand why many here would prefer it.
I personally think the remaster sounds much more alive and fluid - but some would argue it's sound is too "goosed".

mono remaster is still relatively fresh for me.
Isn't the 30th anniversary CD the same mastering as the original CD release?

  14. Oh, No, not another rather pointless criticism of another rather pointless Beatles thread. :sigh:

    Yet, I want to participate.....:D

i have the 2009 mono in cd and an apple stereo vinyl (probably from the 70s). i listened to the mono when i got the box but that was the first time in years and years, and probably the last time for most of it....

I agree. The stereo remaster sounds very alive and 3D/'in the room' to me. I thought the stereo remasters of the White Album and Beatles For Sale accomplished this the best.

Yeah the bass is goosed but a flat transfer doesn't always sound the most enjoyable to me.

Holy cr@p! I thought I was going to be the first to say MFSL vinyl, but ted321 just beat me to it. Absolutely love that one! But for something a little different, the German DMM White Vinyl is a great listen every once in awhile.
