Currently, I prefer the mono CD (from the mono box, of course) :)

    I have a 20 year old fatboy, so I don't need the 2009 remaster.
I think that of the 4 or 5 2009 remasters I have heard so far, there is no significant improvement over my 20 year old CDs to warrant re-purchase, and the White Album is no exception.

German DMM gets my vote too. MFSL is my second choice.

I have the Apple label vinyl and the purple Capitol rerelease and like them both about the same. I also have the original CD release and i prefer either vinyl version to the CD - I have not heard any of the newer CD releases.

I actually think the black box looks quite good, even though it's, admittedly, ... black. I love tapes and would love that set. My preference is for the 2009 stereo remaster.

It's a draw for me between this and the 2009 remaster. Different but equally good in their own ways.

2009 Stereo mostly because "Long, Long, Long," becomes a true song and not a hiss covered whisper.

Haha! Good point...the White Album in a black box. ;)

I found it in a used record shop many years ago, and just bought it because I thought the box looked so cool. Don't think I've actually ever played the tapes. Think they're still good? (Playable?) I also found the McCartney cassette on Apple that same day.

My preference is also the 2009 stereo remaster.

Nice to see lots of love for the German DMM LP.

  20. I have the German DMM and the black vinyl copy from before that with the "Deutches Schalplatten" sticker on it, and prefer the latter; the DMM is crazy-bright above 12k. Other than that the two pressings are similar. The black vinyl German and the '87 cd sound remarkably alike.

    For mono: 2009 mono remaster
For stereo: original fatboy 2 cd set.

I'm not sure I can hear above 12kHz anymore. Not sine waves anyway. Definitely not in my left ear, damage which I attribute to sitting too near the PA stack at a Zappa concert.

I heard a needledrop of the German, and thought it sounded very nice. But I'd stick with my 24-bit FLAC 2009 remasters. That wasn't a poll option...

I have the MFSL vinyl too. Now THAT is bright. When I heard the original CD issue I thought it was dull and boring. Now I realize that the original CD was probably far more accurate. According to Mickey Fremer, extremely close to the original UK vinyl. I wish they had cut the MFSL with a little more restraint now.

My guess is because of the preserved track-by-track dynamics.
That would be my reason to prefer the 1987 CD anyways. Some songs were more silent than others for a reason. It makes for a dramatic listening experience. Never mind the ever so slight peak-limiting.

I'm going with 2009, but can't decide between the stereo or the mono; lately it's been the mono, probably for the punchy quality and the occasional mix/edit novelties (shorter "Helter Skelter", etc.)
