I'm sure Steve can give us a proper answer.

How the sound differs from a test pressing on CD-R (copied from the mastertape) and the final CD, which goes thru' all pressing stages???

    Herr Cheng,

I have a few secret tricks that I do to the CD master to make sure that the factory pressed version sounds exactly like the CD-R ref I clone from the master tape. It took some trial and error in the past to get the two to match up, but using some test tones and pink noise, I finally got a formula for success. So, they do for me.

Steve, what do you use to produce the CD-R ref clone?

    Mud,

The HHB is super, in my opinion. I have one as well. I believe that Steve has the 830. I have the 800.

    Highly recommended!

I stand corrected! - Steve has the 850! - Cool.

My 800 was an earlier model but, I still love it! That 850 looks like a sweet unit!

Steve, do you use it as a listening player as well in your home set up or something different yet again?

I don't use it as a listening player, no. One could though, but I use my Sony SD-777 instead up there.

Any perceivable differences between the 2 listening wise or is it just a convenience thing?

Dave, the playback of the 777 is razor flat, which is what I need (obviously). The HHB sounds fine, but I detect more "air". The unit is very "control-able" sound wise with different interconnects.

Yeah, it makes a nice sounding CD-R. I think these are probably around for around $500-$600 these days...

    REAL TIME RECORDING ONLY THOUGH....

For good, dependable quality, that's not too bad of a price. For now, I'm happy with my Plexwriter but one day I'd love to get a stand alone recorder....

    Steve,

Back "in the day" when I bought my 800, I paid about $1200.

Well, it is built like a tank...

Why? Plextor is for computers and is the best for making CD-Rs that way. I prefer mastering with software, anyway. Everything is more precise.

Grant, don't get me wrong, I love the Plexwriter and also using software to do work but a nice stand alone CD-R would be nice in my main system in the living room. It would just make things easier when doing a vinyl transfer, etc. Right now I have my PC and recording equipment in the bedroom. If I go for a stand alone CD-R, it would be some time later next year or so. Right now, I'm trying to build up my savings because of the lack of work situation. As luck would have it, I needed to replace my DVD player but I couldn't go through the holidays this year without being able to watch some movies. This year especially...

hey, I understand the money crunch. We have them too!

My PC is part of my main system! Heh! Heh!

I have better results making cd copies on the stand alone burner. if I copy something from disc to disc (cdp to standalone) thru a fibre optic cable, it comes out better than copying it to the hard drive and making a disc.

In theory, it shouldn't matter, but it does.

(actually, it's just a hair better, but it's that hair that makes us nuts!)

This is the first time I've separated my PC from the main system. When I first moved to this apt. in May I had the workstation in the living room (in a corner). After a month or so I decided I wanted to make the living room more about comfort and place to relax rather than about access to gear. I moved the PC/recording gear to the bedroom and 90% of the time it's worked out fine. The 10% drag is when I want to make a vinyl transfer or monitor some stuff on the good system. When I need to do a transfer, etc., I hook up my Tascam DA-20 to the main system and then return it to the bedroom system (not the end of the world) and when I need to monitor something from the PC on the big system I made a very long coax that wil feed it a digital signal (so far no drop-outs/used just to monitor, etc.). I kind of like keeping it separate at ths time. It's nice sitting in the living room (especially with guests) and not having clutter. I bet my wife would've been proud...

Just wondering...what type of software were you using to extract the disc? Exact Audio Copy? What type of drive were you using to rip and burn?

Also, some CD ROMs are horrible at digital audio extracton. And, if you go 1:1 copying, you must make sure that the data isn't running through the soundcard.

I started using audiograbber, the check sums come out all right. My burner is a mitsui something or other that came with this HewlettPaclard. I've experimented with burning at different speeds. but usually, a fibre optic transfer sounds a hair better. I mean the sound is all there, but I lose a little presence.
You think it's worth upgrading to a plextor?
