Hard to believe the movie is 40 years old. Still looks and sounds as fresh today as it did back then

I’m new to make such a bold statement....but if this movie is not the finest youth culture movie EVER made, with a cool cast and kick ass soundtrack, then I don’t know what is..
    Oh, just my opinion!

Even though Moonie had just died, 1979 was an exciting time to be getting into the Who as a teen...two exciting new films (this and The Kids Are Alright) plus soundtrack albums and a major tour.

There’s a great program out now - Quadrophenia Our Generation, all about the making of the movie, cast interviews etc
Interesting fact that Franc Roddam didn’t just want the film to be a soundtrack all about the music of the Who, hence the reason for side 4 of the soundtrack to contain the kingsman, James brown, Booker T etc, differs from the earlier Who double album

Yeah, I watched it all on Sky Arts last night, it brought back great memories. It's on again tonight, at a much later time:
    10:00pm Quadrophenia
12:15am Quadrophenia Reunited: 40 Years On
    01:45am Quadrophenia - Our Generation

I loved Our Generation, one of those programs that was just captivating, I just couldn’t get into the reunited show though, just seeing them all redo some scenes under the studio format simply didn’t work for me.
I bought the blu ray of Quadrophenia a while ago, but seeing it so “clean” made me miss the grainy VHS that me and my mates used to rent off the mobile video van all those years ago!

  12. Very dated film. The youth of today would probably laugh at it. I recall finding it edgy and a little terrifying as a young teenager. Today it's all far too camp to be taken seriously. Time has not been kind to it.

I recall a screening a few years back in which the audience actually laughed whenever Sting was on screen as the Bell Boy.

As for Franc Roddam, I just learned today that he is the creator of the "Master Chef" TV show, so I guess that he's not doing too badly, even if he is not at the forefront as a film director.

Sadly, the youth of today would probably relate more closely with Trainspotting

    I just watched it again.

    The Criterion Blu-ray is beautiful.

I saw this when it came out at a midnight movie showing when I was just 16.

Was already a big Who fan then.

I absolutely fell in love with Steph (Leslie Ash).

    Great, great movie.

The soundtrack features John Entwistle's re-mix, which is superior to the original LP.

This is the album that made this latecomer a major Who fan, just as the original band had expired. The drumming on the soundtrack just amazed me.

The CD to get is the single-disc without the extra non-Who tracks. Much better sound than those with the extra tracks.

I purposely did not see this when it first came out because of the hangover from the disaster that was Tommy. However, there was good word of mouth and I did think it was very good at the time.

BTW, Billy Idol was a great Ace Face during the US tour.

I remember being extremely uncomfortable watching this as a teen. The movie was so accurate at portraying Jimmy's social and sexual frustration that it was a little too on-the-nose for me at the time. Unless today's youth no longer suffer from the same maladies, I would have to think that its impact has not been dulled by the passage of time.

When I saw this in 1979, I had just been dumped by a beautiful red head who looked very much like this girl.

So at the time, it was tough getting thru this film. Probably not something I want to revisit.

But I'll always love the album.
