They do, but almost without exception I've found them to be old, miserable, overly serious or pretentious. Generally enemies of joy.
Absolute masterpiece 5/5. The flow is amazing, particularly when you consider we move from face grinding rock, through bouncy pop, through light hearted music hall, through monster semi-prog epics.... It is in some ways a shame that Rhapsody was so huge, because it seems like this album gets some kick back because of it. Great track, but not even the best on the album. The Prophet Song makes this album great on its own
This is exactly why they're nearer to The Beatles than anyone else. They're the only other band that could do all that and make it work, while still having mass appeal by being great songwriters. Bands like Led Zeppelin shied away from singles because they were incapable of writing constant hits.
I loved this album when I was 13. I love this album now I'm (nearly) 53. That makes it a masterpiece for me
Yea, Queen cop all sorts of flak, from all sorts of people, for all sorts of reasons, but the quality of songwriting was very high almost all the time. The guys all played their instruments really well, and also understood how to play for the song, and not over it. I guess some folks like to throw bombastic out a lot when they talk about Queen, but I guess I just like bombastic, because I reckon it is awesome. Just beautiful little things like May imitating a jazz band with his guitar, are gold to me... then you have Mercury and Taylor both in posession of great rock vocals, and both completely different, and when needed incredibly complimentary, particularly live.
The album lives up to its name, in a way. It really is like a night in a theater listening to a wildly brilliant musical play of sorts
Probably, there aren't many though! Genuinely, what I have found is that people who were around in the 60s and early 70s don't like Queen, with many really hating them! A lot of people around my age (mid 40s) have a lot of affection for them, most seem to like Queen at least to some extent. At the moment Queen seem to be appealing to young listeners more than any pre 2000s band.
I love it! It's totally ridiculous with terrible lyrics, but the music, harmonies and production are great.
I don’t know much behind the recording of this album, do you know if they were serious with those lyrics or were they tongue in cheek?
Very true. Hard to find someone my age who doesn't know at least a few Queen songs... at the very least. But they probably couldn't name a Pink Floyd song (outside of Another Brick In the Wall [Pt. 2]) to save their lives.
It's obviously tongue in cheek to me, but Roger Taylor's such a dreadful lyricist so often I can't be totally certain.
Love every track. Still gets played regularly and has done since I was about 2 years old. I know it inside out.
News of the World is the weakest 70s album to me, but it sounds great. That says a lot because it's still a fine album.
