Queen II, Sheer heart attack and A night in the opera. I can't think of a better trilogy of albums

I love this record. Really dig the short, possibly lesser known (renowned) songs on it like Lily of the Valley, Misfire (though the lyrics are a bit painful), and Dear Friends.
So much classic stuff overall. That moment where Freddie shifts from his falsetto to his full voice in Brighton Rock is still chilling to me. And Killer Queen is...killer Queen!

Freddy on full voice in a hard rock song is incredibly powerful - he can cut through anything. The example you give is a great one.

Sheer genius or sheer madness? A bit of both I think.

I had an original U.K. EMI pressing that I could not stand the sound of. Just a grating mastering job.

I am considering the half-speed master from 2015. Just picked up the hsm of JAZZ and it is really great. So many Queen fans love Sheer Heart Attack that it seems like the next step.

Different versions of Sheer Heart Attack that I own (I did have the 2015 vinyl, but it's the same as the 2011 cd, which I also own).

    Original UK press (near mint)
    Original UK cassette
Japan 2004 mini vinyl CD - EMI TOCP-67343
    2011 remaster "deluxe" CD
    1986 EMI ‎– CDP 7 46206 2 CD

As in give them credit for that. Applaud that effort. Same way the phrase is usually interpreted.

Ah, you'll applaud them for one song. Generous of you to give them that. :D

Well they have some lovely songs and rocking tunes mixed in there with pure bombast pretense.

Let me know if you want to know what I mean.

Well you got thrown off, and asked previous poster "what do you mean"? (Give them that).

So I was preparing to let you know what I mean if you needed any explanation.

I have always wondered about the use of the word "pretense" in regard to music, the word means the false and imaginary or fake and progressive bands are often accused of it,so what is wrong with a musician playing the full extent of their talent and ability ? are they supposed to play beneath it to"keep it real" in some people's eyes.

What drew me to progressive rock back in the day was the fact that these people were playing on a much higher level than many around them and I was inspired by them and there was certainly nothing fake about what they were doing, real talent creating real and interesting music that has stood the test of time.

Pretense is like being pretentious. And what is wrong with that? It's promising more than what's likely to be delivered. Like in Queen's case, promising a Mozart symphony with ballet worthy of some other classic composer from a few hundred years ago. Ok well so what right???? What's the concern if they are that great? Then you go see them live and they got more tapes playing in the backing than ELO ever dreamt of. That's called pretentious, plain and simple, nothing worry about if you dig it.

Killer Queen is arguably the quintessential Queen song. Lushy glamourous cabaret pop, a killing guitar solo, perfect harmonies.
    Pop perfection.
