What is the reason for writing down the next move for the next day when a game is adjourned? If you know your next move why would you adjourn?
I believe adjournments are no longer allowed, because it’s too easy to enter the paused board position into a chess computer. Even back then, as shown in the series, both sides arguably cheated overnight, as both Borgov? and Beth get help analyzing the position from teams of assistants. If chess is supposed to be a head to head battle of wills, it doesn’t seem fair to have teams of seconds factor into the outcome, although the Tour de France likewise features battles between star riders supported by teams of underlings. I suppose if both sides are cheating overnight, at least it’s somewhat of equal advantage to both sides, but it still doesn’t seem right.
There are plenty of other excellent original series on Netflix. It’s hardly as if this is the first. Although none of the others have Anya Taylor-Joy to draw in the Nextflix naysayers.
Watched the final episode Saturday night. Excellent series and I echo the positive comments above mine. Also, I also agree that there are many worthy Netflix shows to watch.
If you need more Anya Taylor-Joy in your life, here she is speaking in her native language for Con Todo: https://twitter.com/contodonetflix/...JV5E-5rzinUf0TH49x0y4gry1eh7DFfMUg-p11-XKPfTI
Because tournament chess features a time clock, the player who moved last before adjournment would be at a terrible disadvantage if the opponent had an entire evening to study his or her response off the clock. By writing but not revealing the final move before adjournment, both players stay on the clock.
Yes that makes sense... it threw me off though because my impression was that they were adjourning because they didn’t know how to proceed.
I presume that, even if she missed her scheduled flight home, sooner or later she gets on a plane and flies back to her home in Kentucky. I have to say I don’t really care “what happens next” or if there’s ever a Queen’s Gambit, Part 2. Not every story needs to be extended forever. The seven hours this series got to tell its story worked for me.
For those left wanting more, it’s worth remembering what happened the last time someone tried to create their own sequel to a Walter Tevis story. I absolutely loved David Bowie’s Lazarus, but I don’t think anyone would claim it did much to advance the plot of The Man Who Fell To Earth.
Richard Price is an excellent writer in his own right, but The Color of Money wasn't as good as The Hustler, either.
Yes... and no. She's looking at the elderly Russian man who has invited her to play him but she's also looking at us : " Let's play "
I'm binge-watching this for the third time since Saturday; it gets better each time. (No sequel required.)
Except The Color of Money was a novel written by Tevis as a sequel to The Hustler. There was no sequel to The Queen's Gambit, and no one should attempt one.
I wasn't suggesting a series 2 but the end poses the question, which is fine and in this case better than being given the answer but you can see why she would choose to stay.
