I sent an email to Chris Bellman at the mastering site. Maybe Ill get lucky and get a response. I agree that its odd that his initials are not in the deadwax. Nothing wrong with double checking.
sorry if this was already mentioned, but scores of classic records releases were cut by CB at BG and do not contain his initials in them. as late as 2009 i believe, yes?
Hello all, Let me put this speculation to an end. As I was on vacation, my assistant cut these lacs using my notes. I was involved in all of the above Lps except for Slipknot which Bernie did. hope this clears it up. CB
Dear Mr. Bellman, Thanks for this clarification and thanks for all your hard work throughout the years. This record does sound great BTW. -OD
Im glad Chris Bellman was kind enough to set the record straight. We audiophiles can be a pain in the butt, but at least we kept things civil on the thread. Bernie rockin’ the Slipknot. Gives this old man hope
Now I’m curious as to why they chose to explicitly advertise “new laquers cut by Chris Bellman” when that is not, in fact, what they had. EDIT: From Storfer (VMP rep) on Reddit: “Hey all- The remastering was handled by the band’s team and the mastering studio, and we all thought it sounded incredible. We got our info from them.”
Probably because some people use the term "mastering" to describe both, the actual mastering and the cutting? So if they knew Chris was going to master this they assumed he would also cut the laquers?
Right, VMP simply advertises what they are told. Another reason it was cool to hear from Chris Bellman on the topic. Why is this important to me? Because now knowing it is indeed mastered by Chris Bellman (technically speaking) then I feel more confident these titles should sound good.
Yep...In the end it doesn't really matter - other than my curiosity about the "!" in this and those other releases where I've seen it. I figured that VMP only has the info that is given to them from the bands handlers, so it isn't on them for the mix up. The VMP sounds great - and I would assume the retail will as well.
Thanks for clearing things up Chris! The final product sounds great. I do have one additional question, could we have the name of the assistant involved? If he actually did the cuts, I think it's fair to elevate his name and career as well. Maybe I'm overestimating his involvement, but he got some excellent work across the finish line with Song for the Deaf. Hopefully the others turned out just as good.
Just ordered "Rated R" and "SFTD"...one of my favorite bands and so bad a$$ live! I forgot these were coming and then thankfully saw this thread today. Thought the release date was 11/22, heck there is so much vinyl coming out, it's hard to keep track of it all. Will be nice to upgrade from the CD's I have. I have the 2-LP set of "Villains" and it sounds fantastic! I know that one was cut by "CB" but I do not think he mastered it. @xfilian so glad you started this thread, or I might have missed these until later on...
