Looking for ECM albums that would fall in the "quiet / spare / minimalist" spectrum. All recommendations will be appreciated.
There are too many ECM albums that fall in that category. This one not one of them. But if I have to suggest an ECM album to anyone, this would be it. Quiet and great, Have a go at it Dave
If you enjoy solo cello --and who doesn't? -- I can heartily recommend David Darling's Cello and its follow-up, Dark Wood. Quiet and haunting.
While it's certainly minimalist in genre, I'm not sure Music for 18 Musicians cabn adequately be described as spare and quiet. There's a very strong drive to the piece !
The Don Cherry / Ed Blackwell albums "El Corazón" and "'Mu' First Part" are lovely minimal duo conversations between two master musicians.
Jan Garbarek's Dis... "The windharp heard on this record was built by Norwegian Sverre Larssen. It is an instrument with strings that are brought to vibrate by the wind, thereby creating tones and overtones, which, in turn, are enhanced in a resonant body ... an instrument reacting directly to the air stream and creating this sound image of the wind. The wind was recorded by Jan Erik Kongshaug on the coast of Southern Norway, a place particularly suitable because of the unending gusts of wind coming in from the North Sea."
There is this album of music by Arvo Pärt. Two pieces, one played three times, the other 2 times. All in slightly different configurations and / or interpretations. The music is as much about the silence in betweeen the notes as the notes themselves: Arvo Pärt - Alina
Are you able to list what you already have, and indicate which you really like? Are you only interested in stuff on ECM, or is ECM New Series OK too (some of the above suggestions are already on ECM New Series)? Do you have a service like TIDAL or Spotify?
