How many times have you turned on the radio, hoping to hear something cool but instead were bombarded with crappy music, on multiple stations? yes I know it depends on personal taste, but DAMN I can't find one station worth listening to...just had to vent!!!

I haven’t turned on the radio since 1997 when they first played Limp Bizkit. Why would anyone do this?

I very, very rarely listen to radio.
Always the same playlists, plus the adverts and inane DJ chat drives me mental.

    Radio is crappy.
Around here though, I get 107.1 The Peak, out of Westchester County. it's basically a hybrid station that plays a lot of well-know music from the past four decades--but not the usual Classic Rock--but with a bigger, more eclectic playlist.
Plus they play new music that fits in with music from the past. So at least you'll hear Fleet Foxes and The War on Drugs and My Mourning Jacket and Kings of Leon.
It's an interesting station and you might hear ten good songs in a row---and that's saying something in 2021.

I also like WFUV, out of Fordham University, but they have gone down over the past few years.
They seem to be trying to appeal to--I really don't know--but their playlist has changed since the pandemic began.
    I'll leave it at that.

We already know how this discussion is going to go. The vast majority of corporate-owned stations are awful with tight playlists and nothing original. A few self-programmed independent and college stations are out there and still good, but are generally low-power and geographically limited. Of course you can stream them online, but at that point most people are going to play Spotify anyway.

i've noticed in the car that the different stations coordinate their ad times so changing stations doesn't work like it use to.

I haven't listened to the radio, intentionally, for about 30 years ... It tends to spoil music I love.

That's a really sad thing too, because before they altered their formatting to just be the same rotating playlist, I discovered a lot of music via the radio

Yes, but the ideal and potential of radio is/was so beautiful.

  17. There’s a great classical and a jazz station I listen to when driving. Can’t complain about either of them.

For music, yeah of course it sucks. For traffic reports (especially when, like me, you have a crappy smartphone)? Priceless.

When I was in college in Ohio in the '90s, I used to brag about how great radio in Boston was compared to Columbus. By the time I came back in 1999 it was just as terrible. Now it is even worse.

I lived in Columbus thru most of the 1990's and thought FM radio was pretty good, whether it was CD101 college radio or QFM96.3 classic rock. Don't go back to Columbus today... it's far worse.

I still listen to the radio quite often. Classical 89.5 KMFA at home and usually 91.7 KOOP/KVRX, 98.9 KUTX or 100.1 Sun Radio in the car. I'm still discovering lots of great new artists thanks to these stations.
