I was down the Kings Road today, first time in many a year. Was humming songs from Ram, last time I did that in the Kings Road, London was summer 1971… fifty years ago. What about you. Does rAM still ..does it good?
Ram works incredibly well as a piece, a whole LP experience, in my opinion. Right down to the choice of what songs to cut out and release as a stand alone single (Another Day/Oh Woman Oh Why). Somehow this weird and eclectic mix of tracks works so well, and they all work toward the same mood in their own way. That's why it's my favorite. I can concretely identify when I'm in a "Ram mood" and yet within that mood there is so much creativity and wild left turns.
I think you have a point there. Back Seat of My Car is a killer tune. Any of the stuff written during the Beatles' era is the strongest.
Ram is very, very good, and probably McCartney at his vocal best. But at this time in my life, I prefer the brooding, dark emotionalism of Chaos and Creation in the Backyard.
Naw, it's not within spitting distance of BotR... it's about Tug of War level, which is a good level indeed, but both have some clinkers and stinkers...
Ram or Band on the Run are always tied for Paul's best in my estimation. Don't know what I'd put as number three. Venus & Mars, Flaming Pie or McCartney.
Definitely my favorite of his, up there with my favorite Beatles albums. Best songs IMO: 1. Too Many People 2. Long Haired Lady 3. Back Seat of my Car 4. Uncle Albert 5. Heart of the Country
A couple songs I usually skip from Band On The Run. RAMs a great headphone listen, in its entirety … experience thing.
ANY album that includes a bit of rock-a-billy, ballads and a "shaker" with choruses is always gonna be ACES in my book!
I have no idea, but if it is, it's a fairly savage indictment of his subsequent oeuvre, n'est-ce pas?
Peak McCartney vocal period for sure. Mono LP version rocks. I had to buy a back up and I never normally do that except for unmissable stuff like the Beatles in Mono box set.
