Of these 6, the Beatles were an easy choice. Then a toss-up between Pink Floyd, the Stones and the Who. Went with Pink Floyd.

There are at least a half dozen groups not listed that I prefer to PF but them's the rules...

Fleetwood Mac is super popular. Maybe it is because Stevie Nicks has appeared on tv shows that teenagers watch like American Horror Story.

But I do agree this forum believes The Doors are as popular as they once were in the 80s - early 90s. Well, they aren’t. They still are pretty popular in the classic rock “fandom” though.

I don’t like the others but probably I’d rank them:

    4. Stones
    5. Queen
    6. Who

I chose The Stones & Beatles.
This despite the fact that i like many bands more than the Beatles so i did not vote as if it was a personal popularity poll of my own.

When you say the "Big Six" Classic bands in the thread title, for many of us that translates to the iconic classic bands, not those who've sold the most records as of 2018. Kinks definitely belong with the others on the former list, Queen does not. (I think the poll results are bearing that out.)

I wouldn't have The Beatles and Stones in with those second generation acts. I'd have them separate along with The Who, The Kinks and The Beach Boys etc. How can I vote for my two favourites when all of those in the poll are favourites? Ranking them in order I would go:

    Beatles
    Zep
    Stones
    Queen
    The Who
    Floyd

Queen? :wtf:. Really? They were my favorite "station change" band when I used to listen to radio.

I hate Pink Floyd, Greta Van Fleet, and (especially) Queen, so I'm not going to waste my time trying to rank them.

Here's an interesting observation. If you were to rate these 6 bands according to how many times you hear their songs played daily on the #1 FM classic rock station here in Los Angeles the list would look something like this:

    1. Led Zeppelin
    2. Queen
    3. Pink Floyd
    4. Stones
    5. Who
    6. Beatles

For some reason the band widely considered to be the greatest of all time is played the least. And when they are played the only song from them you ever hear is Come Together. Even the Who get played more than The Beatles and more than one song regularly (Baba O'Riley & Who Are You). In contrast, various songs from the top 3 on this list can be heard throughout each day.

Please note that I'm not talking about streaming stations here. I'm talking about the #1 Classic rock FM station in the 2nd largest market in America.

    Strange don't you think?

Note: I edited the post because I spelled O'Riley incorrectly and didn't want to offend any Who fans out there.

  15. Crazy, but the US RIAA numbers claimed for each artist are greater than what the US RIAA presently show. SO it calls into question all the stats.

    Beatles. Must I 'splain?

    Who. Songwriting, instrumentalism, lyrics, rhythms.

Stones? Some. Quite a bit, I guess.

I only like two Queen songs, and no one's ever heard of the second.

Please don't make me comment on Zep or Floyd.

    4. Beatles
    5. Who
    6. Floyd

And, in my world, the Beatles are only that high because I recognize their influence and their greatness. But I’ve listened to the other five bands much more than them.

Exactly right. They may have started only two years after Zep, but they are contemporaries of Aerosmith or Bruce Springsteen or ZZ Top--all of whom released debut albums the same year as Queen. They are a different generation than the others on the list.

To put it another way, "The Beatles" were already pretty much up and running by 1959--but no one calls them contemporaries of Buddy Holly or Chuck Berry.

Yes. Even people who say they "can't stand" The Beatles have to give them props for their influence, innovation and legacy.
    If they are honest.

Not a chance. The Doors’ status in the grandpa rock hierarchy has dropped dramatically over the past 25 years.

Queen is not of the stature as the other five.Somebody always wants to squeeze Queen in to the top. There can only be five...Black Sabbath just barely misses the cut.
