^^ I have a bootleg version I obtained in a trade years ago. I haven't listened to it in a while but I remember it being good.

I notice from the cover shot that Tommy was also a thumb player.

Yes, iirc Toy and Tommy's father played with his thumb and he taught both of them to play like that.

As I work my way through the Marshall Tucker Band albums I am really amazed at these guys. I listen to the first 30 seconds of so many of these songs and I think, well, here comes one I don't like. But by the end of the song I'm going, wow, that's one of their best! They are really good at getting in the groove and jamming and taking songs to a whole other level!

After the Allman Brothers they are my favorite southern rock band. Like them better than Lynyrd, Outlaws, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Elvin Bishop and Wet Willie. I think what helps makes them so enjoyable is that they are all very good musicians. Paul Riddle is an excellent drummer and really drives the band.

Yeah, Paul Riddle is really good! They were really lucky to find him. I hear the story is when when the others returned from serving and were in their 20's they found him in the 11th grade in high school.

The second cd I ever bought. Lynyrd Skynrd's "1991" was 1st.

I never got this one either. I'm guessing it's hard to come by now.

I have the cd version. I believe it has more tracks than the lp. It's got good sound. It was a live radio broadcast. Also Toy is pretty hoarse. The last couple of songs Doug's voice starts to give out too. Overall a good album though.

I’m not much of a country fan, but this is a slightly different arrangement of the quintessential Tucker song and isn’t too shabby

I will admit that I'm not really a Marshall Tucker Band fan. I'm aware of the band's biggest hits but they really don't tickle my fancy.

Having said that, I think that the "Last of the Singing Cowboys" is a fantastic song!
I love the song's jazzy feel with a memorable horn arrangement (courtesy of Steve Madaio).
Doug Gray, Toy and Paul Riddle certainly added a lot to the mix.

Are there any other MTB songs that are cut from the same cloth as "Last of the Singing Cowboys"?
I realize that this song is not really representative of the bands overall output.

Maybe Stewart Levine was the secret sauce on this track?

Great tune that kind of flies under the radar. You might like Toy Caldwell's solo version of "This Ol' Cowboy". Horns and jazzy guitar solo.

just listened to the title track to A New Life today.

WOW, what a song. Doug Gray's vocals in the chorus (not to mention the ensemble playing of the group) are beautiful beyond words.

Heck yeah, he’s good. Very much a jazz influenced drummer

Here are some previous songs that are of the similar territory…upbeat, jazzy, swinging shuffle with horns:

Another Cruel Love (A New Life)
Now She’s Gone (Where We All Belong)
Walkin’ And Talkin’ (Searching For A Rainbow)
Life In A Song (Carolina Dreams)
Change Is Gonna Come (Together Forever)
