This one's quite rare. And it didn't meet the sellers reserve:

No, I've never heard it, but I know one person who owns a copy. He collected A&M LPs numerically.

Related: I'm watching two Herb Alpert CDs on Ebay. One's the What Now My Love album, with five days left to go. I give this one perhaps $200-$250 closing price--the US version didn't stay in print very long:

The second Alpert CD is Fandango and I've seen copies sell for over $300 lately. Closest solo recording of his to the old "Tijuana" style. Another Japanese issue, and it has four days to go:

FYI: The seller of the What Now My Love CD, smiley_yamada, is good. I won a CD from this person recently and received excellent service.

Smiley's gonna retire nicely if that CD goes up the way I think it will. :D

What's the deal on the Spirits and Worm LP? Why is it so rare? (Not as in "because there are so few copies", which is self-evident, but WHY are there so few copies, relative to other A&M albums of the era?)

I think you nailed it: there are few copies. And there *were* few copies, since there weren't many made. There are some A&Ms that almost qualify as being "barely released", and this has to be one of them.
