  1. Terrifying

A very cool and easy-going song, breezy. Micky sounds great. AWESOME to have all three guys participating on this one. Would've fit quite well on the album proper. 4/5

Should have been on the album. Trying to keep the running length to a colgems lp wasn't really necessary, was it?

Today’s song is Christmas is My Time of Year:

This is not exactly high art, but neither was it intended to be.

It’s a pretty good cover and it’s nice to hear Micky and Davy singing together. I made a comp of 70s Christmas songs recently and, while this doesn’t exactly rival Slade or Wizzard, it fit in quite nicely.

I slightly prefer it to the original, but then I am probably biased… I do appreciate the fact that they made quite a few changes to the lyrics and the arrangement though.

    3/5.

    Gotta sneak this in here...

Terrifying - I think it’s a nice song that could’ve made the album. Considering that I listen to my digital download of the album with the bonus tracks tacked on at the end most often, it’s easy to forget that this wasn’t on the album. I give it a 4/5.

Christmas is My Time of Year - I like this song, but when I play it back to back with the original version, I don’t find that much of a difference. Luckily, I play this version most often so I can pretend that I don’t know it’s a cover. I think that it’s an infectious song, but the stop/starts kind of wear on me. Davy seems a little overpowering in the chorus. Having Chip Douglas producing is a welcome shot of nostalgia. I’ll give it a low 4/5.

Christmas Is My Time Of Year - Outside of the DJBH recordings, this song is the first official Monkees reunion record as you have Micky, Davy and Peter on it, plus, Chip Douglas producing it. All it needed was Nesmith adding a bit of jangly guitar on it. (I believe he was invited to participate but he declined).

Micky and Davy share lead vocals and Peter is on Hammond B3 organ with Eddie Hoh on drums. The instrumentation benefits from Chip’s production. This is what a 70’s Monkees song would sound like while capturing their 60’s sound.

The song was originally issued in 1976 through Davy Jones’ fan club, the flip side was Davy’s solo rendition of ‘White Christmas’. The 1986 remix first appeared on the Rhino Christmas compilation CD ‘The Best of Cool Yule’.

It finally officially appeared on a Monkees album on the Target CD version of ‘Christmas Party’ and the ‘76 mix is on the 2019 ‘Christmas Party Plus’ Record Store Day Black Friday double single release.

Happy to see this song officially become part of the Monkees canon. 5/5.

"Christmas Is My Time Of Year" -- 3/5

It accomplishes what it was meant to do. It's a nice fan club Christmas single, which I like much more than I do 90% of Dolenz, Jones, Boyce and Hart. I am not, on the whole, a huge fan of hearing my favorite rock/pop artists sing Christmas music, but when it's done right, there can be some fine results.

The timing to discuss the Christmas music could not be more perfect. This tune is fun for me. Quite enjoyable overall.

Thanks, Fred for the background info!

Micky sounds drunk on the verses; Davy sounds great on the chorus. Love the bass line, as well (I'm assuming it's Chip). The song goes on a little too long what with the synth medley interludes and whatnot - I wish it came back into that killer chorus.

Regardless, a very solid 3/5, edging towards 4 but not quite there.

Christmas Is My Time Of Year. 3/5. I LOVE THIS SONG! Mostly because I love Christmas music. But rated as a regular song, I give it a 3. I didn't discover this song until sometime in the 2000's. If I would have known of it's existence in 1986, I would have been over the moon. Either way, it has become a Christmas standard on my holiday playlist.

Christmas is My Time of Year

Starts off pretty low key but builds into a nice santa singalong. Extra point for the sleighbells.

This is a nice fun track and I like it more than most of the stuff on Christmas Party. It's nice to have 3/4 of the boys back with Chip Douglas. It's not a great song but the warmth around it makes me very fond of it.

Probably should wait for the next CD to be rated but today I had the time to review the above. The first 36 songs are all songs that I personally listen to all the time, with most of my favorites within that group as well. At the bottom, much agreement from me too but I like and listen to 213 and 219 and then 185 is a top track for me, apparently not for many others.

Christmas is My Time of Year- it's difficult for me to rate Christmas songs, since I don't listen to them unless it is December. This is a really good one. Everything that I want in a Monkees song (that will not be the case in the coming days). As a Christmas song, it is a 5/5, as a song in general, I give it a 4/5.

Christmas is My Time of Year is a solid 4 pressing to be a 5. When I got Monkeeshines and first heard it, maybe 3/4 years after the single release, I thought it was very Monkees like and with good reason; the 3 group members and Chip involved. Really a great holiday song and glad it got a release that sounds cleaner. Betting I have higher ratings than most for the rest of the CD with only a track or two that I do not really enjoy, more on that in future days.

Christmas is My Time of Year is a solid 4/5. I feel bad because for the past month or so I’ve given mostly bad grades to everything I bothered voting for. But this is a very nice record and it’s nice to hear them both on it.

After the disappointing DJB&H album the Christmas song was a breath of fresh air. This song always makes me feel good. Great vocals from Micky and Davy, and a solid production from Chip. I enjoy Christmas music, and this is one of my favorites.

    5/5.

CIMTOY -- 5/5 -- it's great. It was great when the Turtles did it, but the Monkees version is top notch.
