Norwegian Wood 10/10, the only one from that album for (it's all about) me

the only time they gave equal share to MacLen's harmony on the chorus, why didn't they bother to do this again?

Wish i could distinguish Paul more on his harmony, he is drowned out by his nasal and arch-nasal colleagues on nearly every harmony :(

the rest? a few up there, a few clunkers

Rubber Soul - 10/10: What can I say? One of my favourite albums.

Drive My Car: 10/10 - It makes no grandiose statement, but it's still one of my favourite songs... ever. It grooves like few things I've heard, and every part is perfect. The bass, the riff, the vocals, the drums... perfection.

Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown): 9/10 - It's very short and there is no good mix of it. Otherwise, a 10/10. Paul's bass perfectly accentuates the rhythm, the sitar is stunning, the lyrics wholly original and the melody is gorgeous. Folk gold. For the longest time this was a top 5 Beatles song for me, and my favourite on the album.

You Won't See Me: 9/10 - Paul was at the top of his game on Rubber Soul. I think it easily has his best album contributions. Here's a good example of why.

Nowhere Man: 8.5/10 - I've never cared for this quite as much as others. Not an overly interesting melody in comparison to other Beatles songs, and the guitar's too bright for my liking. The arrangement isn't overly interesting either. Still, decent lyrics and I'd kill to write a melody this good.

Think For Yourself: 10/10 - Great lyrics, fantastic melody, brilliant vocals and harmonies and an awesome fuzz bass. Sometimes this song gets dismissed and I have no idea why. I think it's superb.

The Word: 10/10 - Also gets dismissed from time to time and I don't get it. The lyrics are great and foreshadow the statement of the era that would be honed in in 1967. It's similar to Drive My Car in that everyone is adding perfectly to the song and that it grooves like few songs.

Michelle: 10/10 - Beautiful production, vocals, bass, melody and lyrics. Just gold.

What Goes On: 8.5/10 - It stands out strangely among the pack, but it's still a very solid song. Harmonies and production on point, with some neat guitar.

Girl: 10/10 - One of my favourite Beatles songs. Atmospheric and melancholic with some hidden details you can notice if you listen closely. Absolutely timeless.

I'm Looking Through You: 9/10 - There's always been something really special about this song to me, even as a kid. Just the way it makes me feel is really unique and I've never been able to figure out why. I can say, though, that I can't imagine anyone other than McCartney singing this. It was made for his voice and it's stunning.

In My Life: 10/10 - A nostalgic and reflective piece of touching balladry. Incredible.

Wait: 9/10 - It may have been leftovers from Help! but it doesn't sound like it and it belongs neatly in this much better album. I like Paul's obvious accent on the bridges.

If I Needed Someone: 8.5/10 - Great bass (as on much, if not all, of the album) but the harmonies are a little on the grating side which I think is due more to the production (hard panned vocals) than the actual harmonies. The guitars are also too bright for my taste, but this is still a really sweet, romantic tune.

Run For Your Life: 9/10 - It's politically incorrect and psychotic if you choose to take it seriously but it's a bit of intense folkery and I like it a lot. Really odd way to end an album like this, though...

RFL gets a 10 if only for the unreasonable hate the song gets here.

Why did metaphor ever have to become misogynistic?

Was "Bang-Bang, You're Dead, Brush Your Teeth and Go To Bed" ever considered too violent for children?

Love this view. With it, one can easily see this is John's album. By a long shot.

Nowhere Man is light years ahead of Yesterday. Probably the most underrated gem in John's immense catalog of excellence.

And misogynistic compared with what? It's practically a feminist anthem compared with many Rolling Stones songs. :p

    True dat!

Kind of funny that Gold Coast Slave Ships bound for Cotton Fields gets a pass. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

I chalk it up to a) bad ears, or b) serious lack of perspective.

I'll go with a mix of criterion factors in my rating process

    1. emotional appeal > 1 to 5 points
    2. quality of composition > half-point each
    • structure of segments
    • melody , prosody , hook
    • dynamics
    • lyrical creativity
    • rhythm
    • contrast
    • climatic resolution
    • instrumental arrangement

    3. quality of the mix > one point

I will come back shortly after I have had some coffee - it is around a quarter to four in the morning here
