I'll take Nicholas Cage in the Knotts role. But please not Johnny Depp.

I loved that silly movie when I was a kid. I looked forward to watching it every year.

This was good and creepy until the blood started flowing. At the end, I was bored and disgusted. It's like two movies mashed together - Good concept/and/schlockfest.

Not absolutely sure if it fits the criteria, but Bone Tomahawk is a fun mix, provided you dig horror movies and westerns.

It also has a great cast, starting with the one and only, Kurt Russell.

    Let's "haunted house"

Someone mentioned "13 Ghosts" Agreed, over-the-top, insane, but inventive and very frightening.

All the classics like "The Haunting" "The Innocents" mentioned. They're so good. I prefer "The Innocents."

The attic in "The Rocking Horse Winner" isn't where I'd want to go.

I'm sure "Poltergeist" has been mentioned

Our British (I think) friends turned me on to the BBC TV production of "The Woman in Black" Wow! Chilling!

I like the new "It" can't wait for Vol. 2.

But the ultimate haunted house film, although the violence may put it into the category of "horror film" -- "Home Alone."

You're kidding, right? If not, what's happened to her.

I wish Deborah Raffin was my girlfriend. A really underrated actor.

Sorry, I mean, my "pretend" ex-girlfriend. I think she's still acting.

I remember seeing that one on TV when it first aired. My father laughed out loud when Cully Sawyer made that guy put a shotgun in his mouth and he pulled the trigger - it was unloaded and the guy fainted dead away. A pretty edgy scene (mostly) straight out of the book. It was certainly as close to a genuine horror movie as you could get with a vehicle starring David Soul and Bonnie Bedelia. I was always disappointed in the re-imagining of Barlow however. On the other hand, Rutger Hauer's scenery-chewing performance in the remake was actually worse.

My all-time favorite is The Legend of Hell House. It's not without its flaws but it still generates an impressive haunted house atmosphere. And the ghost appearances (mostly slamming doors and moving objects) are very effective for what they are. The unseen element of the ghost is more creepy than an actual apparition.

I was very pleasantly surprised and impressed by the Daniel Radcliffe version. I have never seen the original.

Don’t read anything about it or watch any trailers or commentary ahead of time. Turn off your cell phone and pee the dog before you start. Wonderful movie making.

Could we at least not let Will Smith do a rap on top of Vic Mizzy's iconic organ theme "just to hip it up for the kids"...?
I can see something like this happening if they already knew it was so bad, it would be the first "big" (over-promoted) summertime release of the season, just to get the Taco Bell collectors cups flying out the door...

THE HAUNTING OF JULIA aka FULL CIRCLE from director Richard Loncraine , a rare underrated gem of the 70(s with gorgeous visuals and soundtrack, and a great lead performance from Mia Farrow. It's not available unfortunately on blu ray and dvd but it's on tv next week!:

    Everybody should read the book

    The Haunting of Hill House
    by Shirley Jackson.

Forget everything you know about haunted house movies and JUST READ the book.
Make it a priority in your life.
Set aside two hours that you would devote to a movie, and instead, concentrate on
the book. If after, two hours, of reading, you want to stop, go ahead, but I'll wager
that you'll want to continue. Two hours of reading. Try it.

    I dare you.

Is it better than Robert Wise's movie THE HAUNTING?
I'm mixed about that movie..some good visuals and soundtrack but not especially creepy, with wooden acting and characterizations...i like even more the John Hough "remake" THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE.

My favourite 'haunted house movies" are FULL CIRCLE/THE HAUNTING OF JULIA, BURNT OFFERINGS, THE INNOCENTS and THE ENTITY. Steve Miner's HOUSE is a fun little haunted house movie too.

It's not a question of being better, a novel is a different thing.
Clear your mind of all these other haunted stories and just
    read the novel.
