  5. The Haunting (original 60's film directed by Robert Wise)
    The Innocents
The Shining (Kubrick's film not the tepid remake for TV)

and although it takes place in space it's essentially the same concept

I liked it a lot, too. It seems like the kind of movie that would be very re-watchable and I think it's been long enough for me to try that. *adds to Halloween queue* Definitely don't remember this as a haunted house movie, but maybe I'm forgetting something?

Just saw Kuroneko for the first time on TCM after reading about it for years. Highly recommended.

Not a movie obviously, but this classic TV haunted cabin story is both funny and scary. Give it a try!

Someone probably mentioned already but I thought Guillermo's Crimson Peak was a great throwback to old gothic horror films.

No one has mentioned Darkness, directed by Jaume Balaguero from 2002. the unrated disc is superior.

An outstanding performance by Ruth Wilson beautifully filmed. Released a couple years ago on Netflix.

Jess Joho: ...one of the most evocative atmospheric horror films exploring the female psyche since Polanksi's Repulsion.

...where every shot looks like a painting and speaks volumes with only the sparsest dialogue.

I've seen it - I wouldn't recommend it, I thought it was a total mess. Also, not scary at all.

This is it. This is the one.
    Avoid the New Hammer remake
    .
You want to see the original.
It was only available briefly on DVD in Canada then withdrawn to make
way for the forthcoming New Hammer remake which isn't nearly as good.
Buy a bootleg on ebay or download it.

This 16mm feature aired as a "ghost story before Christmas" a tradition
we don't have in America, on Christmas Eve 1989. It is superbly written,
produced, directed and acted. I consider it one of the best ghost stories
    ever filmed.

If you'd like to feel like you're doing drugs, then I suggest the crazy Japanese movie - House - from 1977. Criterion has a nice blu ray edition.

(oops, this movie was already recommended on the first page - sorry!)

I couldn't agree more - I hate that it is so hard to find (legally) in good quality.

I love the Ghost Stories for Christmas tradition and I'm making it a point to gather up as many of these as I can.

In general, I LOVE the British approach to horror. I don't know if I can accurately say what it is they do that makes the films so good. The one thing I can point to is an overall excellence in acting. Also they seem to really understand and apply great care to things like lighting, set design, and locations.

Netflix currently available. I don't make any claims on any of these, only that they looked interesting enough to me or I had heard enough good things about them that I stuck them in my queue:

    The Blackcoat's daughter
We have always lived in the castle
I am the pretty thing that lives in the house
    Malevolent
    The Lodgers
