You took the thought right out of my head.

I haven't seen anything new in the genre from British television, but in the 1960s
and 1970s the "ghost story before Christmas" shorts on Brit TV were of the same
impeccable quality as Dead of Night (1944) or Lewton & Tourneur's three films.
Unfortunately most of them are only available on region 2 DVD. There's never
been an official blu-ray release for any of these classics -- except one, the film
Schlacken the Painter I think it's called.

The British had one advantage in that they didn't try to turn ghost stories into
hi-tech action movies. The relied on a well-thought story, careful plotting, adult
characterization, and traditional script structure. It's still the best way.

The Woman In Black had the advantage of dramatist Nigel Kneale who was
    an asset to any film.

Night Of Dark Shadows. Not as good as House Of Dark Shadows but worth watching. I wish those in charge would restore these films to their original length.

    So do I.

When Curtis was forced to cut the film he had to choose between
the action in the third act and the ghost story. He cut the ghost
story. I wish he had chosen to edit the film the other way. But
I'm a life-long fan of Night of Dark Shadows since I first saw
it five times in a row on opening day.

Now that's dedication. I snuck out of my grandmothers house as a small kid to see House Of Dark Shadows and it scared the crap out of me. For days afterwards I was jittery and I couldn't tell anyone because I hadn't asked for permission to go see it.

THE CHANGELING, AMITYVILLE II, BURNT OFFERINGS, THE SHINING. If you don't mind comedy, HOLD THAT GHOST with Abbott and Costello.

I’ve never been a big fan of horror movies but The Haunting (1963) is memorable, as is The Shining. Dr. Sleep wasn’t bad.

They’re basically haunted house movies at their core.

No they're not. Alien and Aliens are fine films but they are
emphatically NOT "haunted house movies at their core."

Give me a break. When somebody asks for a haunted house movie recommendation, give them a haunted house movie recommendation. Don’t get all creative license with definitions. Haunted = ghosts. Aliens are NOT ghosts. Sheesh.

    What are they then?

Lol--you take things far too literally in real life, I imagine.

The aliens ARE aliens. Monsters. Not ghosts.

As for taking things literally in life -- grow up.

The end of both movies is literally the beasts stalking and popping out of places. Aliens plays up this trope even more.

But they have to be "ghosts". Ok. Go off.

Dude, the guy asked for a “haunted house” recommendation. I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe stop trying to be witty with your responses? Because Aliens is *literally* the worst recommendation for a haunted house film when somebody is wanting to watch, oh I don’t know… a haunted house movie? No I’m not the most literal person in the world, but if I ask for advice on a good beer and somebody says Woodchuck and I buy it, I’m going to be pissed off. Beer is beer. Cider is cider. And a haunted house ain’t no spaceship. So why not recommend Mr. Mom? It’s a haunted house movie, too… “if you think about it”. After all, it takes place in a house and stars the guy that played Beetlejuice, right?? Lol
