Thanks to all who recommended Kyuss. I did not realize this was Josh Homme's first band. Nice to always discover stuff. I got Welcome to Sky Valley and Blues for the Red Sun.

I am a HUGE Kyuss and QotSA fan (I listen to Kyuss way more though). This is GREAT stoner rock...not that I would know anything about what a stoner likes or anything.

You will be a very happy man I am sure. I am also glad to see such support for Kyuss. It's amazing how many fans they really have. Now I know why their catalog is still in print too....

DOWN is one of my favorite all-time bands, along with EYEHATEGOD. Nola, Take as Needed For Pain, Dopesick...all classics of a higher order.

This is obviously splitting hairs, but Kyuss is really considered "Desert Rock" and not Stoner Rock. I believe the distinction is in the amount of instrumentals? Or maybe because of where they were located & where they played the bulk of their shows.

I have not read this entire thread, so forgive me if this has already been posted.

I was looking for something else today, and I came across a whole online store of stoner rock!

I've heard both terms used, but Stoner Rock seems to have stuck. While I don't question the listeners ability of "being stoned" while listening to the Doors, Grateful Dead, etc., they aren't what is normally deemed as Stoner Rock by it's modern definition. That term is probably not new, but was definitely defined by a very unique sound and style created by Kyuss. A good comparison would be called the MC5, NY Dolls and the Stooges Punk Rock, but by historical standards, they were really weren't.

Yes it has been posted. Great store and has been up for many, many years (like even before 2000 I think), but I have yet to order anything from them.

Spiritual Beggars second album, Another Way To Shine, is a classic. it's the only one i like. came out in '96, i believe.

heh, Kyuss are desert rock just because they were based out in Palm Springs and used to play gigs out there in the desert.
though i think Homme would not be impressed with all this discussing of genres.
Stoner rock is all encompassing, but you'll know when you hear a desert rock band or a space rock band. you'll just know!

Yes, they are pretty cool too. I like the record with that girl on the front (name escapes me - the record and the girl). They were a bit on the crispier guitar-sounding/heavier side. Almost like Entombed.

anyone like Witchcraft? the first album got A LOT of hype when it came out a few years ago. picked it up earlier year, so far i'm not feeling it. it does have a "vintage" sort of production, and musically reminds me of the limited amount of Pentagram that i've heard. some here might dig it.

Witchcraft was perfectly described to me as 'Pentagram meets 13th Floor Elevators'. i like 'em, but they are nothing to get excited over. i would think twice about buying their next album, unless it's really good. worth checking out, though.

    Wino

i like Spirit Caravan much more than Hidden Hand, and The Obsessed more than Spirit Caravan. Wino is a legend, but he'll never to The Church Within, IMHO. just my $0.03.

  24. I think I can help here, especially if you prefer heavy riffs and non-growly/gurgly vox:

Awesome Machine - Under the Influence (there is a version w/a bonus CD)
    Atomic Bitchwax
    Alabama Thunderpussy
    Activator - Both Barrels
    Astroqueen - Into Submission
Black Lamb - Low Road or Hang the Moon
Burnout - Armour of the Gods

    Candybar Planet - 32 Bitch
Cathedral - (a little more on the metal/doom side but excellent)
Chrome Locust - S/T (their only release?)
Clutch - (I'm fond of their Pure Rock Fury CD but it's all good)
Corrosion of Conformity - (post-punk years) Deliverance is my fave but the rest have a huge sound too.
    Countach - Gasoline
Cowboys & Aliens - (both albums), they're getting hard to find but you can't beat their solid heavy songs
    Cuda - Hellfire
    Daredevil - 3rd Degree Burnout
Devil to Pay - 30 Pieces of Silver
Duster 69 - Ride the Wild Horses
Earthride - Taming of the Demons
Firebird - (Japan releases have bonus cuts)
    Gammera - Smoke and Mirrors

Generous Maria - Command of the New Rock
Glow - Dive Into the Sun

    Pawnshop - Aloha from Saturn
Pearls and Brass - Indian Tower
    Pharaoh Overlord
Puny Human - Revenge is Easy
QOPH - Pyrola (great if you like MOR, the Japan has an excellent bonus cut)
Quill - (all excellent, not to be confused with two other bands with the same name, get "Hooray...", "In Triumph", "Silver Haze", or "Voodoo...")
Red Giant - Devil Child Blues
    Rickshaw - Sonic Overload
    Roachpowder
Rollerball - S/T (track "Jonathan E" is one of the top 10 stoner rock tracks ever!)
    Sasquatch - S/T
    Satellite Circle -
    Sideburn - Gasoline
Sixty Watt Shaman - Seeds of Decades
Slo Burn - Amusing the Amazing (there is a longer version with more than four tracks but it sells for huge kahunas)

    Solace - Further
    Solarized - Neanderthal Freeway

    Sunride - The Great Infiltration
    Superheavygoatass - 60,000 Years
    Sword - Age of Winters

    Terra Firma
    That's All Folks

I own all of these and more. I simply cannot stop. Just yesterday placed two orders at the mentioned stonerrock.com for over 20 discs. Help!
