Thanks to all who recommended Kyuss. I did not realize this was Josh Homme's first band. Nice to always discover stuff. I got Welcome to Sky Valley and Blues for the Red Sun.
I am a HUGE Kyuss and QotSA fan (I listen to Kyuss way more though). This is GREAT stoner rock...not that I would know anything about what a stoner likes or anything.
You will be a very happy man I am sure. I am also glad to see such support for Kyuss. It's amazing how many fans they really have. Now I know why their catalog is still in print too....
I forgot to mention DOWN and Corrosion of Conformity. (their "In The Arms of God" album is one of my favourite albums of the 00's)
DOWN is one of my favorite all-time bands, along with EYEHATEGOD. Nola, Take as Needed For Pain, Dopesick...all classics of a higher order.
Going to see them headline here on Saturday here in NY (Heaven and Hell, who I am also seeing tomorrow, is playing solo on that date). Very excited.
Some 60s stuff to get you there or keep you there in the zone Electric Prunes Mass in F minor Jefferson Airplane After Bathing At Baxters Chocolate Watch B Inner Mystique Grateful Dead Anthem Of the Sun Doors Strange Days Country Joe Fish Music for the Mind and Body QMS Happy Trails and from the 70s Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here Black Sabbath Black Sabbath just a few choices
This is obviously splitting hairs, but Kyuss is really considered "Desert Rock" and not Stoner Rock. I believe the distinction is in the amount of instrumentals? Or maybe because of where they were located & where they played the bulk of their shows.
I have not read this entire thread, so forgive me if this has already been posted. I was looking for something else today, and I came across a whole online store of stoner rock! http://www.stonerrock.com/store/ath.asp J. D.
I've heard both terms used, but Stoner Rock seems to have stuck. While I don't question the listeners ability of "being stoned" while listening to the Doors, Grateful Dead, etc., they aren't what is normally deemed as Stoner Rock by it's modern definition. That term is probably not new, but was definitely defined by a very unique sound and style created by Kyuss. A good comparison would be called the MC5, NY Dolls and the Stooges Punk Rock, but by historical standards, they were really weren't.
Yes it has been posted. Great store and has been up for many, many years (like even before 2000 I think), but I have yet to order anything from them.
Spiritual Beggars second album, Another Way To Shine, is a classic. it's the only one i like. came out in '96, i believe.
heh, Kyuss are desert rock just because they were based out in Palm Springs and used to play gigs out there in the desert. though i think Homme would not be impressed with all this discussing of genres. Stoner rock is all encompassing, but you'll know when you hear a desert rock band or a space rock band. you'll just know!
Yes, they are pretty cool too. I like the record with that girl on the front (name escapes me - the record and the girl). They were a bit on the crispier guitar-sounding/heavier side. Almost like Entombed.
i picked up The Hidden Hand's "Mother*Teacher*Destroyer" album recently. definitely fits the "stoner rock" bill. it's good. check it out.
anyone like Witchcraft? the first album got A LOT of hype when it came out a few years ago. picked it up earlier year, so far i'm not feeling it. it does have a "vintage" sort of production, and musically reminds me of the limited amount of Pentagram that i've heard. some here might dig it.
Witchcraft was perfectly described to me as 'Pentagram meets 13th Floor Elevators'. i like 'em, but they are nothing to get excited over. i would think twice about buying their next album, unless it's really good. worth checking out, though.
Wino i like Spirit Caravan much more than Hidden Hand, and The Obsessed more than Spirit Caravan. Wino is a legend, but he'll never to The Church Within, IMHO. just my $0.03.
