Also "Pat Martino/Live!" -- it and "Consciousness" are almost a double album in my mind.

I agree. I learned quite a bit of the guitar parts from that album with an instructor back in the 80s.
Man that is some spaced out stuff.

I've always wanted to transcribe some of the solos on those Pat Martino albums, but it seemed too daunting (mainly the unrelenting speed and long long long lines, not the choice of notes so much.) I attended a lecture several years ago where he went into his philosophy of music. I think I have a good grasp of how music works, but his conception is way over my head.

The Wes Montgomery Half Note album is just blazing! Green’s IDLE MOMENTS and Burrell’s MIDNIGHT BLUE are essential too.

Agree and second many of those already mentioned.

Add Johnny Smith to the list. Moonlight In Vermont with Stan Getz is great, but the man didn’t make bad records. Ever.

Also highly recommend the jazz sides recorded by Hank Garland, which were collected some years back on a collection called Move! The Guitar Artistry Of Hank Garland.

On the other end of the spectrum, Miles Davis’ Get Up With It (1974) features an incredible array of guitar sounds & playing from Pete Cosey & Reggie Lucas. John McLaughlin appears on one track also. not for the faint-hearted.

    So many greats.

Yet another vote for Wes Montgomery Smokin' at the Half Note.

When I was teen taking guitar lessons, THIS is the album my teacher told me to study.

I have many of those already recommended so I will go with some newer players in Bill Frisell and Charlie Hunter.

  16. Tropea also does the guitar solo for that epic arrangement of Also Sprach Zarathustra by Eumir Deodato on CTI. From 1973, an era when it was still possible for an all-instrumental tune to get radio airplay and chart popularity. My first exposure to jazz guitar playing, I think.

And then try something like Henry Kaiser and Waddada Leo Smith's Yo Miles! project...the 2 SACD Sky Garden set is good (if it's still in print).

Oh, and another vote for pretty much anything by Bill Frisell, even if he's not always especially jazzy (for want of a better way of putting it).

While I think that this is a great CD, for straight-up guitar virtuosity, I prefer his CD with Joey DeFrancesco, "Relentless".

Start with East West by Frisell and Ready Set Shango by Hunter to see if you like them. I use to go see Charlie Hunter for 5 bucks back when he was still in he bay area in the mid 90's.

Note that if you get into Bill Frisell with Paul Motain and Joe Lovano the pre ECM stuff is pretty intense.

I've seen Kamasi quite a few times over the last 3 years and have never caught so much as a whiff of a guitar player...
