Berry Gordy (and other regular Motown producers), Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, the Dust Brothers, George Martin, Jeff Lynne, Phil Spector, Todd Rundgren . . . I like producers who "inject themselves into the music" and who have an auteur-like style, so that albums produced by a particular person sound like a collaboration between the artist and the producer. In my view, if you're not using a producer in that capacity, why bother having (an outside) one? Just have an engineer who can help you with technical issues and produce yourself. Producers who are just "documentarians" are useless in my view.

Which means that if you're a band not interested in doing a collaboration, you should produce yourself. Hire a producer because you want some of that sound in your work.

Max Martin.... whether you love or hate his work, he's been producing hits now for over 2 decades, a very long time especially in pop music

Jimmy Miller. Stones, Traffic, Johnny Thunders... He upped the game for the artists he produced, had impeccable feel and taste and was also a talented musician.

just as I thought word "hate" was too strong to use, here comes your comment
I am not Swedish but even I am proud of Sweden because of this guy. To still be relevant in pop music and connect with new pop listeners after 20 years is a huge achievement for any producer
