Not everything comes back. The example of 8 track and cassettes is certainly proof of that. Local store has a room full of media for fifty cents :78s,LPs,45s,CDs,DVDs,VHS,reel to reel, 8 track and cassettes. Any tape is worthless. LPs get cleaned out every few weeks by a guy who send them overseas. CDs used to clear out while slowing dramatically, have some movement. But the tapes stay. I understand the store only takes them when in a buy involving other media. Cassettes seem to reproduce like wire hangers in a closet.
Kids have little interest in any physical medium. If you can capture the art on a screen, they don't need a physical version. My youngest, under 40,has been doing this for years. The grandkids have no need,no need,no need for physical media. Their living space has no room for any of this stuff. They are coming up. Collectors are dying.

Sounds like the store's junk room, i.e., the last chance of a sale before the dumpster.

...and more than a few unloved goodies come home. I've found two signed Peter,Paul & Mary LPs,also signed Henry Mancini,Reprise promos singed by Joe Smith, when he was working radio stations(he would eventually be the head of Warner Bros.,Elektra and Capitol-EMI during his lifetime).
    Lots of promos 45s.
When the store was running a "fill a box for $10" CD blowout,I found tons of unloved jazz titles, some housed in cardboard sleeves as promos, but full length and possibly unplayed. Rule of thumb for jazz fans-it is near impossible to find a true dud with a piano trio.
LPs pressed in mono only for AM radio stations as mono disappeared in the stores.
I'm a collector of the soft rock Free Design and there were two copies of their 1968 Christmas radio show for the U.S. Air Force.
And remember since the next stop for the vinyl is overseas,at least another step away from the dumpster.

I have had similar experiences at my local stores - they hardly offer $1 or at the most $2 for CDs (if they do want to take it) and a lot of them offer less than $1 while they do have them selling for $3.99-$9.99. As others have said, IMHO it's better to donate them or give them away to another music lover or maybe barter or sell in bulk online. I am a new user so am not sure if there is a barter/trade/sell option on here but I believe there is a selling one which gets unlocked after sometime. I used to try and sell them individually on eBay previously but with the rising shipping/supplies costs it is not worth the time and effort anymore unless you have a collectible (but if I do have one then I would rather not sell it anyways haha...)

If you are a member with 50 posts or more you will have access to the classified sections on the forums for buying, selling and trading but no public bartering. Firm prices are a requirement and trades must be specific with no groveling for offers.

That would be a cool option to try (trading) as I believe there is a ton of music that am not even aware of that other people own, thanks for the tip.

Things certainly have changed over the last few years. The value has of course dropped. CDs that I would have expected $3.50 t0 $4.50 in trade are now down to $2.00 to $2.50 per trade. Some CDs and actually newer titles from any genre that are lesser known can gather only $1.50 or $1.75 each.

There are certainly vagaries when doing trade ins. This is only a personal observation. I'm definitely one of the older customers in the stores at any time. I've have been shopping Zia records certainly for more than 20 years here in Phoenix. They have 5 local stores and I travel around enough to hit them all. What I notice is either an age thing or just a lack of knowing customers in the result you get. Younger, less experienced staff always give me lower than expected trade value. They tend to offer the lower end of the "scale". Older, more experienced staff who may recognize me as the regular, long term customer that I am always give me at least what I would expect based on today's values and probably 25% of the time I am receiving somewhat more.

It is hard to walk in the shop and try to pick the employee you want to work with but I try to drift towards those I know but sometimes you are stuck with younger, less experienced employees who don't know you from "Adam".
