I feel the same way! It's such a rare glimpse into what Gene was doing in that period. I think the sound quality is excellent considering the condition the original tapes and acetate were in.

It was just hard card, Ingrid. No padding, the disc was fixed in place and the package was pretty much the exact size of the record. Relatively light too, considering.

Dear GC fans, while it is exciting to talk about the release, how it is available, prices, and the packaging, I am completely astounded that nobody has said anything yet about the music!!! I stood in line for 90 minutes on Saturday morning and when it was my time to look for the release, it was all sold out (just minutes before apparently). Can somebody please describe the four new tracks, especially the Douglas tape? I am very familiar with the Byrds Parts version of "If I Hand Around," but not without Chip on it. Please, please, please talk some about the music! Isn't that the bottom line? :) Thanks!

I've been waiting for people to talk about the music myself. I love pretty much everything Gene did, but this is by far my favorite period of his career. "Yesterday, Am I Right" with the full orchestral treatment is very interesting. I had read in both Einarson's and Rogan's books about it being a bit bizarre-o, but I think it's quite good! Gene was really experimenting during this time and really coming into his own identity (or at least trying to) so I don't find that particular track bizarre at all. It's actually very consistent with "Back Street Mirror" and "Don't Let it Fall Through" and along the same vein and "Only Colombe" and "The French Girl". Too bad it didn't go any further. The second side is acoustic demos. The solo "If I Hang Around" sounds excellent. I've always said that with Gene less is more, and just his voice and his guitar give the song a certain mood and sound that is unique to only him. "She Told Me" sounds like it could have fit in with something off of Sings For You. The song has a similar tempo and vibe as some of the songs from that acetate and I like it quite a bit, but my favorite has to be "That's What You Want". Not much is said about Gene's harmonica playing, but I think he's really excellent at it and this song shows that. Unlike Dylan, he doesn't "skree" through the song with the harmonica, it's a nice accent to a really lovely song with a bit of melancholia. What strikes me about these songs was how old he was when he wrote them. Gene was about 22 years old when he recorded these (his birthday is in mid-November) and it's astonishing to me how his songwriting has always been "mature". By that I mean that the point of view, the song structure and the delivery sound like they are from a very seasoned performer. If anything these songs show how gifted he was. The sound quality of the songs is excellent. Being involved with this project I had heard the raw tapes before they were cleaned up and only heard the finished tracks yesterday. It is astounding how much they were improved. "That's What You Want" still has some detectable glitches but it's pretty amazing it sounds as good as does considering the tape was sitting in a drawer in Hawaii for 50+ years. "Yesterday, Am I Right" was sourced from an acetate (a very scratchy one at that) which is why it was not included in the "The Lost Studio Sessions". Considering the awful condition of that acetate, it is amazing that they were able to get it to sound so good and clean. The EP turned out very nicely and if you're a fan of this period of Gene's career as I am, you should really try and add it to your collection.

It's my favourite period too. He was fearless in his experimentation with sounds and directions, a quality for which he is seldom given due credit.

I'm glad that I asked him to put it on his RSD list. I won't hear it until my daughter comes for a visit in mid-July, but I'll be really happy to have it.

Interesting but this might just be a coincidence as songwriters often use the same phrases in different songs. Like 'Here Without You' at the end of 'Back Street Mirror'. Rogan suggests 'Maybe You Think' was from the Preflyte days and has a contract in which it's included with those songs. Funny how the song still hasn't appeared on tape anywhere.

A bit odd inasmuch as you're suggesting that Einarson and Rogan in their books supposedly consider the song bizarre. What's the source? Einarson (p. 120) says the horns, flutes and harpsichord are "an odd combination" but that's hardly pejorative. Rogan (Requiem 2, p. 81) notes the "distinctive horn arrangement" adding " the production is strong". He also says the song is "exceptionally good" (p. 82). I can't see any indication that either writer considers the song 'bizarre', especially Rogan, who has nothing but praise for the composition. I suspect they'd probably both share your view!
