On my first trip to Europe, I ended up at the HMV store on Oxford St. I bought a copy of the UK pink-covered Mott album and brought it home and have treasured it since. As much as I liked Mott, that album was the first great band album in my opinion.

Actually, Dream Syndicate was an added minus for us. A Velvet Underground ripoff and too loud to boot! More painfully, the earlier leg had The Suburbs opening! How I wish they had stuck around for one more show before heading back to Minneapolis.

That's too bad.....I thought they were great, but I'm a big fan of them anyway!

Would a Mott The Hoople cover band ever call themselves Martha Oople?

I’ve got a complete collection of first UK pressings of every LP and 45 (including the early misspress of the first album with the alternate mixes) and I frequently have a Hoople night with the turntable here.

They occupy a huge place in my heart and I love them dearly.

Only thing I dislike is that the US sleeves of so many of their classic LPs were messed with.

    Long Live MOTT!

Could you say a bit more about the early misspress, would really appreciate the knowledge, TIA!

    I found this...from

Mott The Hoople – Mott The Hoople (1969, Gatefold, Vinyl)

Mispressing of Mott The Hoople’s self-titled debut album, mistakenly including the track “The Road to Birmingham” as well as alternate versions of other songs. Island Records mistakenly used the wrong stampers to press the earliest copies of Mott’s first album; these copies include “The Road To Birmingham” at the end of Side 1 and “Backsliding Fearlessly” as the first track on Side 2 (omitting ”Rock and Roll Queen.”) Additionally, there is an alternate mix of “Laugh At Me”, a different version of “Half Moon Bay,” an extended intro to “Rabbit Foot And Toby Time”, and an alternate “Wrath And Wroll” with with a few bars of “God Save The Queen” at the end.

I was at that show - it was so intense and so much fun. There was as much energy coming from the crowd as the bands.

They dont make double bills like that anymore.

Saw them a couple of times in the early 70s. Man they were loud but great. I liked Ian's "H" guitar!

I was at that Felt Forum show!
It was great but really loud.

Edit-Did Wolfman Jack introduce the bands or am I hallucinating?

I must say , my musical taste doesn't feature much ballads at all within classic rock.I love the hard, fast songs like "rockn'roll" by Zep or Razamanezz by Nazareth.

I like ballads by singers and songwriters like Jim Croce, but not that from rock bands.

The ballads were their best songs, which is no small feat when you know how great the rockers were and Mott is by far their greatest album. Well, in addition to Mad Shadows, Brain Capers and The Hoople anyway. The debut is also pretty nifty. And All the Young Dudes too :D

What a great band. They should have been contenders. Overall their albums are mostly wonderful. Where do I start with Ian Hunter? He doesn't get nearly the recognition he deserves. He's 82 years old for crying out loud. I'll take whatever he's having.

Great band and their All the Young Dudes might be my favourite glam-era track. Didn't buy the single at the time for some reason although I did get All the Way from Memphis when that came out. Love all the albums including Wildlife which tends to get written off in some quarters and the Mental Train box is essential.

Saw them in 1973 in a small gig inWales just after all the young dudes was released . I like them but found some of the early songs were too long. Needed a bit of editing especially on Mad Shadows.

One of my favorite rock pix ever!

Maybe a blended memory with Mott's appearance on "Midnight Special"?

Not sure if the band (or the novel which band took the name from) but there was a one panel comic strip called “Our Boarding House”. The main character was a Major Hoople was kind of an overweight foolish blowhard. The one I remember (I had it posted on my car visor) was Hoople telling the boarders he believed in vigorous exercise and nutrition. They reply “could be, he walks miles around a pool table, naps on it frequently and gets a wide variety of grains in liquid form”.
