I'd love some insight into the recording chain or setup Rick Rubin of American Records uses. Is he an analog fanatic like Steve Albini? Does he take the Mapleshade less-is-more approach? Or is he a 48-track digital guru? You know, stuff like that.

Rubin first got my attention with the Slayer album "South of Heaven" he did back in 1988 or so. "This is how speed metal should be recorded," I remember saying. "Forget Robert 'Mutt' Lange and Ted Templeman, Rubin's got the right idea."

I'm curious, because I think Rubin's recordings of Johnny Cash are really quite good and warm, with great presence and detail (at least on CD; I haven't picked up the vinyl yet). While listening to one of Cash's recent CDs with a friend whose band is currently recording, he wanted to know how Rubin did it. So I thought this would be a good place to ask.
