Dawn Wells, who starred as the demure Mary Ann in popular 1960s sitcom “Gilligan’s Island,” died Wednesday of causes related to COVID-19 in Los Angeles. She was 82.

A native of Reno, Wells also appeared in “77 Sunset Strip,” “Maverick,” “Bonanza,” “The Joey Bishop Show” and “Hawaiian Eye.”

Publicist Harlan Boll announced her death.

Wells represented Nevada in the 1959 Miss America pageant and appeared on several TV series before being cast in “Gilligan’s Island” in 1964.

After the series ended in 1967, she returned for several TV movies and spinoff series.

Wells is survived by her stepsister, Weslee Wells. Donations may be made to the Elephant Sanctuary, Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum or the Shambala Preserve.

:sigh: One of my all time favourite shows. Silly? Sure, but it had a lot of heart and great characters...and...Mary Ann.

This freaking year can't end soon enough!
    :realmad:
    RIP, Mary Anne

Of course, if the producers had chosen differently, Dawn Wells wouldn't have been Ginger's foil, it would've been....

Oh no. I was just watching some of her recent interviews on YouTube earlier this year and thinking what a great attitude she had about her legacy and career. RIP. I'm so tired of this virus.

I was fortunate enough to meet Dawn Wells back around 1989 or 90. Both she and the professor, Russell Johnson were hired by our radio station to do a promotion.

A friend of mine got to meet her around that same time on some kind of promotion and he said that she was genuinely nice, both to him and to the other participants.

The ironic thing about this is that if you actually watch "Gilligan's Island" from the perspective of an adult male, Mary Ann wasn't really "demure" at all. I mean, yeah, I guess she was "demure" in comparison to Ginger, but if you removed Ginger from the cast, then Mary Ann would have been considered the smokeshow that she actually was.

I'm sorry but Ginger seemed high maintenance.
