June Carter Cash hospitalized; in critical condition

    http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Music/05/11/cash.hospitalized.ap/index.html

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- Singer June Carter Cash, the wife and Grammy-winning duet partner of Johnny Cash, was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday as a result of complications from heart surgery, according to their longtime manager.

Cash, 73, had the surgery on Wednesday at Baptist Hospital to replace a valve, said Lou Robin.

He said Johnny Cash is asking everyone able to pray for his wife's recovery to do so at 10 a.m. CDT Sunday.

"June did this for him one time when he was critically ill," Robin said. "The recovery the next morning was something the doctors couldn't describe or imagine."

June Carter Cash is a singer, songwriter, musician, actress and author.

She and her husband have performed together on record and on stage, doing songs like "Jackson" and "If I Were a Carpenter," which both won Grammy awards for them in 1967 and 1970, respectively.

She also co-wrote Cash's 1963 hit "Ring of Fire," which was about falling in love with him.

man, what a family. Johnny couldn't make it without his soulmate. I do hope she recovers. She has so much spark....and she's very funny. Johnny would have been long gone without her.

I could talk forever about the carter family and about how important June is to the survival of Johnny but instead I just pray and hope she has a fast recovery

Boy, what the family has gone through in the last year. Johnny's declining health, the death of Howie Epstein, and now this.

Hopefully, she'll make a speedy recovery.

Just in: she passed away a few minutes ago. No news stories on the wires, yet. How ironic - after all the pills and booze Johnny Cash consumed, he's still around......and after she literally saved him from that life!

A very sweet woman. I'll send Johnny and the rest of their large family my prayers. This will be quite a blow to them.

Sad news indeed, RIP June. I hope Johnny can cope. Playing Johnny's version of "Hurt" is a real downer right now (even more so).

    Sometimes life isn't fair.

June is now "well out of it" as the Southern old-timers say. It's Johnny I'm worried about now! You know what happens.....:(

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

Looking at that recent video, it seemed to me he wasn't far away from the Reaper's embrace..he looks a hundred years old...who would have believed his wife would leave first? This is just so terribly sad...and very sudden, it seems. We knew she was in the hospital in critical condition, but I never thought it would end like this, and so fast.

    R.I.P., great lady!

Heartbreaking. I was hoping for a miracle. My condolences to the family. The world has lost a mortal link to an important part of our great American music heritage but the music of the Carter Family lives.

Very sad news indeed; I don't think I can watch the 'Hurt' video right now, I think I would break down. My wife and I just watched it on Tuesday night:(
R.I.P. June, Johnny will be with you eventually.

'everyone I know goes away in the end'.

    I can't believe it.
I don't know what to say.
Johnny Cash was in my life before the Beatles.
My whole family loves them both.
I feel terrible for Johnny and don't expect he'll be around much longer.
June was a wonderful lady, in every sense of the word. John was lucky to have his soul mate for so long...but I was sure he'd go first and she'd be around in her 90's.
It's been an awful, awful week.
