Napoleon XIV had a hit with "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" in 1966. You really can't forget this song if you heard it. Jerrold Samuels, the man behind it, passed away March 10th. Napoleon XIV - Wikipedia
Wow, I just looked him up and he wrote “The Shelter Of Your Arms” that Sammy Davis Jr. had a hit with . Good song.
Second Coming Amazon.com Napoleon XIV "The Second Coming" is a great CD if you are a fan. Even has the backwards version of "They're Coming To Take Me Away" as a unlisted bonus track! R.I.P.
Well, I can't speak to that. Maybe the 1975 version was merely a different stereo mix. I don't have my LP in front of me, but I managed to find a poor image of the rear cover of Dr. Demento's Delights, and the very last sentence of text reads "Nap, whose real name is Jerry Samuels, re-mixed this cut for us in Demented Stereo."
Mr. Samuels' "Napoleon XIV" calling card could make legitimate claim to being #1 in both Cash Box and Record World (for one week each), in spite of Billboard keeping it pinned down at #3 before it began its chart freefall there. Its beat, meanwhile, seemed to be lifted off of Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" (but not from the recording thereof). I don't know how many radio stations would have segued between that and "They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" without missing a beat.
