She also directed a film I love, Awakenings, with truly great performances by Robert De Niro and Robin Williams (and Julie Kavner, John Heard, and more) and with a great musical score by Randy Newman.

I always liked her first movie, with Whoopi G., Jumpin' Jack Flash.....seems like nobody I know has ever seen it. Ah well, RIP Miss Penny.

  10. Do these Hollywood muckity mucks ever write "RIP?" I don't think they do. I've never seen them tweet or write a RIP.

I hope she got a great amount of satisfaction doing all those movies that tried to be different from the stuff she grew up around. Doesn't sound right to speak ill of the dead and all, especially since I just finished ripping Hallmark Christmas movies a big one, so best wishes for the family, and here's to hoping her lasting legacy stretches further than just being a chick in a sitcom.

Really sad news. I had a huge crush on Laverne when I was a kid.

    Very sad.

TV lives forever, characters never age because of repeats. Yet reality and time marches on.

    Rest in peace, Penny. :(

I've seen A League of Their Own and Awakenings many times and love them both. Did not know Penny Marshall directed Awakenings.

RIP Penny, you were in league of your own!

She was here in Evansville filming A League of Their Own. Several members of my family were in the stands as extras. Speaking of Laverne and Shirley, I love the theme song.

Kevin Smith ALWAYS has to make anything that falls out of his mouth tie into him/promote him no matter what. This basically sez: "Hey, guess who I lived next door to? You should listen to my podcast! Oh yeah, she's also dead."

Dude's biggest love affair is with the sound of his own voice.

She was such a beautiful, talented, sexy and funny girl. I remember she was my first crush watching the reruns of L & S. I recently bought the whole series and these last two weeks I kept wondering how she was doing. So sad when i heard the news!

An amazing actress, and remarkable Director. Saw most of her TV work before hitting it "Big" in her film work!

Laverne and Shirley was one of my favorite shows growing up. Loved Big and A League of Their Own too.

One of the funniest scenes of all time (I'm not kidding as it made the Top 100 Funniest Episodes of all Time by TV Guide).
