ABSOLUTELY AGREE! Became a Robert Palmer fan the very instant I heard him! He was smooth, soulful and funky. Check out a song by him titled You're Not The Only One, it's too funky!
Having had the good fortune to have been able to hear Palmer perform (more than once) in intimate venues in a college town during his Sneakin' Sally heydays, I can vouch for his talent and charisma. The live experience was awe inspiring and what it did to my girlfriends at the time, well, I couldn't pay Robert enough for how he improved my evenings! I only wish the recordings could have been a little better . . .
I think he gets pretty good respect on steve hoffman forums. The man got some real good airplay in his time and many appreciate his early efforts. His commercial pal was relatively short, so he is not elevated to a higher status by some. Had he lived longer who knows... I think he would have always followed his muse and made interesting music.. And perhaps had a resurgence in popularity.
Fantastic singer, one of british greats along Marriott, Stewart and Farlowe. The Island stuff is phenomenal but the Vinegar Joe albums are well worth a listen.
Uh...NO. His output from 1974-1980 was anything but middle of the road. Very funky, very inventive. Great stuff.
Agreed! His first few albums are terrific, and certainly not mainstream. Even the later albums have some innovative gems, aside from the mainstream hits. He deserves much more recognition than he gets.
I just discovered that "Riding High" had arrangements by the great Clare Fischer. I never listened properly to his nineties work.
To be honest, I do not know who Clare Fischer is, but I can say that I love the arrangements in "Riding High" and I think Robert Palmer does a wonderful job singing those beautiful songs.
Didn't she also do string arrangements on Don't Explain tracks ? Some ballads on that one and Heavy Nova had supreme crooner characteristics.
We used to ride tandem and have lots of fun But bicycles for exercise are made for one... Extended Version of Pride. This uploader has several wonderful rarities
What is the version on Addictions Vol 1? I don’t have my cd handy, and Wikipedia is silent. It has an extended intro not on the album version, but lacks the album version’s outro. I think the main part of the song may be the same, but I haven’t compared carefully. It’s definitely not the version you just posted.
Opposite to most people and all stores I don't have any Robert Palmer compilation (apart from the stupid cut off music videos dvd) only regular albums. You could check Discogs, it has running times in many cases.
Without the massively successful and loud dancin' gal video hits we could have had more fantastic ballads like this one (with an added bonus)
Pride is VERY quirky/non mainstream. He throws in two cover dance tunes that stick out as wtf moments, though they are great songs. The last song, The Silver Gun, goes too far out for me, it's really out there.
can you provide any comments on the quality of the recordings? are they the same versions as they were released on their orginal albums? remastered? I see it is also available as a 2LP set.
You can absolutely say the same about Between Us. If anyone can tell me something about these videos, whether they're available on dvd or exclusively on vhs/laserdisc Supernova ....
