Rock Hall Revisited: Class Of 1994

I put Purple in their first year of eligibility. The wait to actually induct was way too long. I did this at the expense of John Lennon who’s Beatle work I loved but thought his solo stuff was too hit or miss.

I think both Deep Purple and John Lennon were legitimate first ballot selections — Deep Purple was mistreated and disrespected by the Hall. That said, John Lennon’s solo work was no more hit and miss than Deep Purple’s body of work. And while some of Lennon’s eclectic, experimental projects like Two Virgins and Wedding Album or political statements like Some Time In New York were not particularly accessible, they were not exactly mainstream either. But his mainstream projects such as Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, Mind Games, Walls And Bridges, and Double Fantasy were consistent (a couple of them were classics) and justified Lennon’s inclusion.

 

And let's not forget what a social icon he's become over time.
